I've run into more than a few. There reasoning is if the parents (mother) don't want the child...and can't afford the child, the child may be better off not being brought into the world. I also got into a good argument with a freind who said that since conservatives aren't in favor of expanding the welfare system to take care of unwanted children, our position on pro-life is hypocritical since we don't want to take care of the child after its birth. Three words: Adoption and personal responsibility.

The welfare system has systematically destroyed the black (and white) family in this country. What did we expect would happen when we paid people to have children...and paid them more when they had more? And then the Feminists had to add their piece to this puzzle by exclaiming "you don't need that husband (or your parents) to support you...leave him and the government will give you even more money for your support." Welfare was a huge confiscator/money-maker for the government, and while rollbacks have changed some of these policies, it hasn't changed any of these attitudes...and thus abortion has become the big money-maker.

One more - orphanages. Newt was pilloried for saying it a few years ago. A well run orphanage would be millions of times better than abortion if adoptive parents can't be found. And with all the classified ads I see everywhere, with sad would-be parents unable to find a baby to adopt, I think adoption is a big answer, until society straightens itself out and premarital and meaningless sex is considered shameful again.

Oh absolutely, this is one of the pro-abort type's standard arguments. But when you actually suggest to them these alternative solutions, that gets you the R label, too -- somehow, expecting people (minorities in particular) to conduct themselves above the level of copulating animals is "racist."
