I have been weaping ever since my government gave India the cold shoulder and in spite of substantial evidence, well prior to 9/11, that Pakistan were the chief nation state regional conduit into Al Qaida and Taliban, we embraced Pakistan believing we needed Pakistani bases. As it turned out, we made very little actual use of Pakistan during the Afghanistan campaign so there goes that argument. Then, there are those who say that Pakistan are helping us round up AQ operatives. Sure, they throw us an occassional crumb but yet they hide OBL and allow a safe zone inside their borders. They relocated a number of their nuclear scientists to Myanmar, not only to keep them from talking to the CIA, but also, how convenient, to proliferate WMDs to Myanmar thereby joining the party that Russia and the PRC already started there. It's all about strategic encirclement of India, pushing ASEAN even further away from the West and toward the PRC and Russia, and, setting things up for a surprise attack ala Pearl Harbor on Diego Garcia as a prelude to the final push to exclude Western Interests and the interests of Western allies (such as Japan) entirely from continental Asia. How we failed to see all this and failed to see that even at their friendliest the regime in Islamabad are true backstabbers, is beyond my Clausewitzian comprehension. Some may call me a zero sum Neandarthal, but mark my words our series of ambiguous positions and failure to see the anti Western Bloc for the menace it truly is shall go down in the archives as the ultimate strategic blunder.
