Notes and Quotes From the California Recall Campaign

On Saturday, 59 days before the Oct. 7 recall election of Gov. Gray Davis, the ballot shaped up as a free-for-all with more than 130 candidates filing qualifying papers by the 5 p.m. deadline.
---
CROWDED BALLOT:
An Associated Press survey of counties found that more than 130 people filed to run for governor - more than a quarter of the 505 people who took out applications. In some cases, the signatures they turned in to qualify must still be verified. The final candidate list will be certified Wednesday by the secretary of state's office.
---
INDEPENDENTS' DAY:
Actor Gary Coleman, comedian Gallagher and political commentator Arianna Huffington are running as independents. Former baseball commissioner Peter Ueberroth, who organized the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, is a registered Republican but says he'll run as an independent, too.
---
FOCUSED DEMOCRATS:
State Insurance Commissioner John Garamendi dropped out of the race after saying he would run. That boosted hopes of Democrats who wanted to rally behind Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, who entered the fray after earlier pledging to stay out. Another well-known Democrat who jumped in: Larry Flynt, publisher of Hustler magazine.
---
DEADLINE TENSIONS
:
Recall supporters in Sacramento accused pro-Davis "thugs" of assaulting them in a protest scuffle. Police broke it up and made no arrests.
---
EARLY POLL:
A Time/CNN poll released Saturday showed voters dissatisfied with Gov. Gray Davis. It found 54 percent of voters would recall the Democratic governor and 35 percent would keep him in office, with 11 percent not sure. Of eight potential replacement candidates, Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger got support from 25 percent of respondents, while Bustamante got 15 percent.
---
QUOTE OF THE DAY:
"I've made plans until 105. Then I'll take things easy."
- 100-year-old candidate Mathilda Karel Spak

It's amazing to me that the left would dare try to discredit Arnold for something his grandfather did, when they boast RAT Larry Flynt as their candidate!

Even though I don't support Schwarzenegger, I also think it's wrong for anyone to hold the conduct of Arnold's deceased father's against Arnie while giving Flynt a free pass.
As far as I'm concerned, Flynt is just slime.

This answers my question. I was wondering what party claimed Gary Coleman.
To: Jay D. Dyson
Or anybody's deceased father, for that matter. But, rats will be rats, and Flynt is one of their peas in a pod.
To: Kaslin
"Well you know larry Flint is just perfect for the left." So true. His campaign slogan is "a smut peddler who CARES".
This is the definition of modern liberalism. According to the formula "caring" is all that matters. It trumps being a crook, a low life, a traitor - anything.

Last I heard, they also have candidates running named Bill Murray and Michael Jackson. Not the famous ones.

Gary Coleman has thrown his support to Arnold via CNN Friday night, but his name and that of anyone else who opts out from now on will still appear on a ballot, if there is one...
To: Jay D. Dyson
The desecretion of our flag by Mr. Flynt should never be forgotten. He apparently believes that the flag is suitable for human waste.

I wondered about that. I remembered hearing that he was destitute, so thought it was very odd that he would spend the $3500 necessary to enter this freak show of an election which he can't possibly win. I guess he sees it as a way to come back into the public eye. He needs a new agent, if this is the best that they could come up with. Thanks for the information.
To: CarmelValleyite
Thanks, I had not heard that. At least Arnold stands a good chance, but I cannot see why anyone would want such a thankless job. I'm sure that the freaks are looking for publicity, but Arnold certainly doesn't need it. From what I have seen, he is annoyed by the persistence of the media.
To: CarmelValleyite
I heard tonight on MSNBC that Gary Coleman's name would be one of the 135 to appear on the California ballot, despite this. I just don't understand why he would bother, unless it's for the publicity. Arnold, on the other hand, seems to be a serious candidate.
