I'm not going to advocate violence, but self defense.

Next time you go to one of these things you put a piece of metal on the end of one of your protest signs. If they attack you again you take your sign post and stick it right through the MFers eye. Or maybe smash him in the mouth as hard as you can and knock his teeth out with it. Keep hitting him until the thug either pi$$e$ his pants or is incapable of getting up to hurt anyone else.

I promise you that the criminal won't be assaulting peaceful protesters anymore.
