The "Birthright" program is totally hefker (a free-for-all). They bring the kids to Israel and then just dump them to go off on their own without supervision. My son Yossi went last month and started hanging out with a bad crowd.

However, there is a happy ending to his story. My son, the Rabbi from Moscow, grabbed a plane to Israel, tracked down his brother, and convinced him to do something productive.

This afternoon he called to tell us that he is joining the IDF "Machal" (for non-Israeli volunteers) with an option to transfer to a hesder, Nachal Haredi or regular IDF unit after 14 months.

Well, my son went to Israel on a Birthright tour and now he is enlisting in the IDF. So I hope that he tracks down his "Birthright partner" and kicks his tuchis.
