Tancredo calls illegal immigration threat to U.S.

Illegal immigration into the United States threatens the future of the nation, a Colorado congressman told Mesa County Republicans on Friday.

U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Centennial, drew two standing ovations from about 100 Republicans, even though he acknowledged his stand on illegal immigration runs counter to that of the party's leader, President Bush.

Forcing a national debate over illegal immigration transcends party loyalty though, he said. At issue, he said, isn't so much whether the United States will have a Balkanized future, but whether it will have a future as a nation at all.

Illegal immigration combined with "the cult of multiculturalism" and the welfare state threaten to undermine and bankrupt American institutions, he said.

Tancredo joked that he actually was on his way to California to get in on the governor's race. In an exclusive interview with The Daily Sentinel, however, he said the stakes actually are a bit higher than a governor's race.

He has visited California on several occasions with the hope of forcing illegal immigration to a top-level issue in the 2004 presidential race.

One vehicle, he said, might be a referendum in the nation's most populous state that would limit access to any government services to citizens or legal residents only.

"Even if I'm 180 degrees wrong," he said, "the subject at least deserves a debate."

Tancredo said he advocates securing the nation's southern border using a 20,000-strong Border Patrol combined with high-tech equipment to prevent illegal border crossings.

A guest-worker program might be in order for industries that couldn't otherwise find employees, but no such program could work without a secure border, he said.

It's particularly important to secure the border, he said, because it isn't used only by Mexicans seeking employment.

"Huge numbers" of Middle-Easterners frequently cross the border, often helped by Mexican drug gangs who charge $30,000 for the use of their expertise, he said.

"I don't blame them," he said of illegal immigrants looking north for opportunity, but he noted the Mexican government relies heavily on money sent by illegal immigrants to their relatives to bolster the economy.

That amounts to about $10 billion a year, a third of the Mexican gross domestic product, he said.

Tancredo urged the Mesa County Republicans to insist that all candidates be held to account on illegal-immigration issues.

Even if offices such as city council or county commissioner seem to have little to do with illegal immigration, candidates still should be forced to take a position.

"Get them on record," he said.

Hey, I just received via UPS my "Tell Me More" Language Learning software to study Spanish!!! They can't tell us apart now, wait for a year or so! My UPS guy is from Dominican Republic, and I told him what it was and said "Gracias", and he grabbed it back and said, "you don't need this, you've got it down"

Actually, my only motivation in learning Spanish is to find out if the bodacious models on Univision are as smart as they are fetching.

I'm pretty impressed that you've looked that high. I didn't even know that they had a head.

What have you done?

Tell me about the specific entitlement rules and policies regarding the enrollment of illegally resident foreign nationals in your county. What's the policy, what are the numbers of enrollees, what are the costs and by what authority do they provide these benefits.

I'm interested to see what your knowledge of YOUR backyard is.

Employer sanctions are the most effective way to stop "regular" illegal immigration. Additional border and port-of-entry controls are also needed, however, to complement employer sanctions and to thwart intending criminal and terrorist illegals who may not ever have (formal) U.S. employers.

Don't expect much of this, of course, under the current President.

What exactly would you have the President do, given his Executive Branch authority? Specifically.

Friend, don't feed the trolls. Don't feed the trolls. Don't feed the trolls. IGNORE ALL TROLLS ON THE IMMIGRATION THREADS.

DO NOT FEED THEM. DO NOT ANSWER THEM. DO NOT LET THEM TRIGGER YOU TO "PROVE" ANYTHING!

DO NOT LET THAT HAPPEN!

This is a friendly reminder.

Those aren't bills, they're floor amendments to FINAL APPROPRIATION bills. They're empty showboating. There's no work or serious intent there, nobody is going to pass a new program or interpretation of immigration law that has not been funded, marked or had a hearing on a Final Reading of an Appropriation bill! He's a joke. If he was a serious professional, he'd have lobbied Debbie Pryce or Ralph Regula or another "Cardinal" prior to the markup, where his initiative could be examined for relevancy, funding rationale and acceptability to 218 members. That's how you do it, only jacknobs from the Minority Caucus throw these Amendments at the final reading, they don't have access to the Ranking majority members to market their change. Tancredo's a showboating bozo.

If you think I'm going let ignorant and disingenous posters use immigration threads to bash George Bush without a ready alternative approach and action plan ... NO SOUP FOR YOU!

So, what is the specific set of actions George W. Bush should take TOMORROW to solve this immigration challenge to your satisfaction? Step by step, with well considered resources, and a realistic chance of implementation and success.

If you don't have an answer, you don't have STANDING to criticize the President. If you are here as a pretext to slam Bush, that's fraudulent and you aren't Free Republic material.

Whether local jurisdictions give my tax dollars to illegal aliens is just icing on the cake. The ongoing cultural balkanization, public safety degradation, and general importation of poverty would still take place so long as large numbers of legal and illegal aliens are here in huge numbers, courtesy of a federal goverment AWOL on the issue.

BTW, my "county" the District of Columbia, gives all manner of benefits to aliens, legal and illegal. It does so because it's voter demographics, like those of immigration meccas NY and CA, all but preclude conservative, common-sense politics and practices.

You would have thought that after all this time, he would have had this whole thing written down someplace.

How are the Vikes going to do this year?

Tell me about the illegal Russians in Brighton Beach, the Jamaicans in Brooklyn, the Greeks in Chicago and the Somali in Minneapolis. They've snuck in too.

I don't think that the number of Russian, Jamaican, Greek, or Somali illegal aliens in the United States even comes close to matching the number of Mexican illegal aliens in the United States.

Thanks. There are always a few of the same 'bots who can't seem to resist immigration threads as an opportunity to deny the obvious, that their man isn't a conservative on the issue. It would be like me popping up daily on the "prayer for Bush", "day in the life of" or whatever other Bush-genuflection threads are going, just to offer my contrary view on the chief executive.

You're not the arbiter of who is "qualified" by language, national origin, religion or race to be an American. There was a day when your ancestor dragged his raggedy ass immigrant self off the boat, and the locals didn't much care for him either.

There is no obligation, moral or otherwise, to abide foreign nationals who come here with no productive skill, means of self support or capability to contribute to the benefit of the larger American family. They need to find a sponsor or return to their homeland.

There is no limit to the number of honest, hard working, productive and inspired individuals that are welcome in America. No limit, ever. We've got room for hundreds of millions more. Every new producer moves the American juggernaut along our God blessed path of freedom and well being.

That's an inexorable destiny, pal, better folks than you and me are coming our way, and they might be dark skinned, cook strange odored food, speak foreign languages and worship in their own place and ways.

In 40 years, there'll be forum where Americans of Mexican heritage will be bitching about the surge of Trinidaddios and Tobagoneers taking their jobs and not assimilating into American culture.

just to offer my contrary view on the chief executive

You can't defend your objection. Again, what would Tom Tancredo, given his executive branch powers, do TOMORROW if he were the President?
