Home schooling an increasingly popular alternative for S. Florida families

These students know their teachers extremely well. They're never late for school. Have no need for cell phones. And, as the very practical 11-year-old Danielle Howard of Delray Beach puts it, "You get out really early, there's no head lice and no school bullies." Unless mischievous siblings count.

Palm Beach County's public school students returned to school last week, and Broward and Miami-Dade students have one more week to ravage back-to-school racks and persuade parents to buy them Manolo Blahnik Timberland knockoffs, or other such fashions.

But the first day of school doesn't faze parents and children in home school. They say the teaching and learning never stops.

"I think we're starting next week," said Danielle's mom, Elise LaTorre.

"We're probably going to start Sept. 8," said Toni Gonzalez, of West Palm Beach.

"We don't have a first day of school. It's continuous," said Elizabeth Fulop, of Sunrise, who home-schools four of her five children, all under 10.

"Because home school is the ultimate expression of small class size, its students usually perform above grade level.

A certified teacher tests students once a year on the same work that public school students must master.

Test scores are recorded at their county district office. Colleges and universities accept home-school students as readily as they do traditional students, as long as they have their transcripts and college-entry test scores.

In Broward more than 95 percent of home-schooled students pass their annual evaluation, said home-school coordinator Rosemary Miranda."

How well are Broward public school students doing on their annual evaluations?

Exactly!! That is the question that the lefty media will never ask. Too bad for them that the home schooled children keep winning all the spelling bees and geography contests. Make their success hard to hide.
