How does stuff like buildings get buried in dirt in England over the centuries? How does all that dirt get from underneath to on-top-of? Will the one story buildings of today be underground in a century??

They just keep building on top of the old.

The Merchant Adventurers' Hall, built in 1357-62, is a medieval guild hall in York, England. It and it's grounds sit about 6 -7 feet below the rest of the city. It's really weird to see.
