When my sister went in for back surgery this summer, the staff was happy to serve her Atkins. They even came up to talk about the Atkins diet and one of the nurses gave her a great cheese cake recipe. Cincinatus and I tried Atkins when we heard about her improved health and we too are Atkins success stories.

I lost ten pounds on this diet but it made me so constipated, I had to quit. (I know; that's more information than you needed.) But it's true. So there.

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine

These are a bunch of hard-left wackos. They hate Atkins because they are vegetarian types (not because they think it might have anything to do with peoples' health). Their stances are entirely political, and have nothing to do with actual medicine.

"Research has clearly shown that high-protein, meat-heavy diets increase the risk of osteoporosis and kidney disorders and that low-fat vegetarian diets help prevent heart disease, diabetes, some cancers, and other health problems."

The agenda is all laid out for you in this one sentence.

Which "research" is it exactly they are referring to? Conveniently they leave that part out...

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine

Any groups with a name like that, must be considered a front group for Leftist loonyism. They're probably all vegans

Appears that the health establishment ("Big Health") is afraid of Atkins because it works.

July 1, I was at 248 lbs. August 20, now at 208. Aiming for 180 by Halloween.

" Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine announced Friday in Washington". Don't know if this is a Washington-based group, but it was announced "in" Washington which seems to me to make it political. In that case, the name of the organization is exactlly the opposite of what it intends to do. Suggesting we adopt a "foreign" hospital policy (socialised medicine) is suspicious. I guess since meat costs more than potatoes, serving more high carb foods is preferable in a socialist system.

Hello? Is anybody out there?

I just learned I have an ulcer from high acid content in my stomach - brought on by an environment of high proteins & low carbs. Plus, a close friend developed gallstones from the Atkins diet, became addicted to the pain medication, and was a basket case for about two years.

I'm just not sure how much long-term health can be maintained on a diet of meat, eggs & cheese, void of fruits and vegetables.

Congratulations on the weight loss. Nevertheless I'd be suspicious of Atkins if I were you all:

They sound like those liberal doctors who interrogate their patients to see if they have guns in their homes. Let's face it, low fat=high carb with insulin spikes which makes people FAT. Put syndrome x or hyperinsulinism in a search engine and see what comes up. The low fat/high carb diet has made America FAT with NO decrease in heart disease. We weren't made to eat grains all year long. When I was on Atkins, eating 3 dozen eggs a week, my cholesterol dropped 100 points and my triglycerides dropped 600 points! The diet works well and most of us need to be on it.

Who needs nutritionists when you can get Atkins' book for $8 at Walgreen's?

Taking a page out of the NEA's book was a bad idea though. This only works when you have a government enforced monopoly. Oh wait, healthcare in England is a government enforced monopoly...

I don't know that I agree with the high fat portion of Atkins, but the low carbs IS the ticket. We've gotten fatter during the last 30 years due to carbs, not fat. As far as kidney and osteo, heart disease (i.e. current dietary situation) is MUCH more common and dangerous. And if you drink enough fluids, you don't have the kidney problems.

Just don't kill your Grandma if she refuses to give you carb laden rice!!

A chubby Queens woman hacked her mother-in-law to death with a meat cleaver after the older woman refused to serve her rice with dinner because it's too fattening, authorities said yesterday.
