Geoghan killed in prison (Boston Herald)
Breaking news/by Eric Convey
Saturday, August 23, 2003

Former priest John Geoghan, a notorious pedophile whose case sparked the clergy molestation scandal of the past 18 months, died this afternoon after being attacked at the state prison in Shirley.

``The perpetrator has been isolated,'' said Kelly Nantell, a spokeswoman for the state Deparment of Corrections.

``Our investigation continues,'' she said.

The matter has been referred to the Middlesex County District Attorney Martha Coakley's office.

Geoghan was serving a nine-to-10 year sentence at MCI Shirley for allegedly groping a boy at a Waltham swimming pool.

More than 140 people have claimed they were abused by Geoghan, claiming they were fondled or raped at locations ranging from church rectories to their own homes.

Geoghan would become one the most notorious pedophiles in the country - not only for the extent of his rampage against children but because relevations about his case led to the unraveling of secrecy within the Archdiocese of Boston.

Bernard Cardinal Law's cordial letters to Geoghan, mixing discipline with praise for his priestly service, that pushed many victims from disbelief to outrage.

This pathetic individual showed no compassion in all his life, he used his position to rape boys and because of this he should have been executed by the State. Prisoners have a legal and moral right to their sentences. It is a travesty of morality, justice, and civilization to subject prisoners to rape, torture, and abuse.

Again, I can understand someone thinking or feeling that the man met his reward (although he killed nobody - his victims as heinously victimized as they were, retain their lives), but taking satisfaction from it is something I just can't comprehend. And I want to add, that I'm a person who was sexually abused (not by a Priest) as a young girl, so I know a little about this.

But that being said, I don't believe I would take pleasure in the demise of the person who abused me. I have no sympathy for him, I really don't care if he continues to live or if he dies, but I don't have any invested emotion in his destruction.

If all sinners are forgiven, one has to wonder what is the need for a Hell???

Yes, I did. Thanks, however for the correction.

I think that executions should be public.

I also think that public flogging and the stocks would be useful punishments for lesser crimes rather than time in county jail.

Agreed. Finding satisfaction in murder, rape, and assault in prisons does nothing to protect kids. Better to have long sentences at hard labor in law-respecting prisons. And throw away the key for repeat offenders.

I only hope his victims feel a little better now that this "priest" has gone on to his eternal reward......

Yes, so do I. Many people, attorneys as well, cannot define "Justice". It is something that everybody knows, but can't explain. The best definition of justice was given to me by an Army Provost Marshal; That is: "Justice is first, the comfort and protection of the innocent and second, the apprehension and punishment of the guilty". If that definition holds true here, than both society and the church relinquished that justice was to be performed by a thug in prison.

Our prisons are lawless? Could that be because they are full of lawless people who were convicted of crimes like murder and stuff?

** the Gates of Hell swinging open for him.**

YOU cannot say this for sure. Maybe he had received the last Sacraments including Reconciliation.

Knock it off!

Christ forgives all sinners

No, he does not. He only forgives those that are sincerely contrite and request it.

He probably asked for it by trying to do to a fellow prisoner what he had been doing to young boys.

I'm thinking there's probably a sizable portion of men in prison who have been molested as children. Probably looked at Geoghan as a prime outlet.

boo hoo

The liberal press was also "saddened" by the death in prison of Jeffrey Dahmer.

Conservatives believe in Freedom and Justice. "Law" is neither. It's laws that bankrupted California, killed 6,000,000 Jews, allows Nambla to exist.

Just because "The Law" says the State can't kill pedophiles anymore does not mean that "The Law" is correct. Until recently, rape got you a ride in "Old Sparky", and if it was a child they turned down the voltage so you cooked longer . If a pedophile is dancing with the Devil, because a felon has children, why is "The Law" right and the felon wrong?

FoxNews just had two clowns on for the past thirty minutes trying to make this into a tragedy. They had a lady on and tryied like hell to get her cornered so that she'd say "poor preist got murdered.. That didn't work so they brought on a man and tried to corner him in the same way. Both guest pretty much said "sh*t happens in prison. he should have thought of that before he molested the kids."

I agree. There must be a rule of law and rape, violence and murder in prison cannot be condoned.I will shed my tears for Geogan's victims, however.(I'm as guilty as anyone of wishing pain on a child molester or murderer. These are human reactions..but following through is not lawful.)

I amazed the NJ department of corrections didn't see this coming. These guys obviously don't watch Law and Order. Seemed like in half the episodes where a transexual, pedophile, child molester, etc. got sent to prison, they got beaten to a bloody pulp or killed.
