Former priest John Geoghan, a notorious pedophile whose case sparked the clergy molestation scandal of the past 18 months, died this afternoon after being attacked at the state prison in Shirley.

``The perpetrator has been isolated,'' said Kelly Nantell, a spokeswoman for the state Deparment of Corrections.

``Our investigation continues,'' she said.

The matter has been referred to the Middlesex County District Attorney Martha Coakley's office.

Geoghan was serving a nine-to-10 year sentence at MCI Shirley for allegedly groping a boy at a Waltham swimming pool.

More than 140 people have claimed they were abused by Geoghan, claiming they were fondled or raped at locations ranging from church rectories to their own homes.

Geoghan would become one the most notorious pedophiles in the country - not only for the extent of his rampage against children but because relevations about his case led to the unraveling of secrecy within the Archdiocese of Boston.

Bernard Cardinal Law's cordial letters to Geoghan, mixing discipline with praise for his priestly service, that pushed many victims from disbelief to outrage.

Clearly a statment by someone who's never been there. Prisons, even in Mass, are hell holes. Just visitng one on business was enough to scare the crap out of me.

I think my mom was a Bircher :) She had all kinds of weird ideas. I would say that because of my mother's obsession with religion, I was better versed in the subject than other kids my age. It's the curse of the "only child" ;-)

While your proposal may have some problems, I think there is a realistic scenario prisons could incorporate. Set up a special room where any inmate reqesting suicide could go do it cleanly and painlessly.

I have a hard time working up any sympathy for this scumbag Priest. I agree the State should have dispatched him instead of another inmate, however.

I was just curious, we have begun to use the word pedophile or paedophile for anyone who molests under the age of consent children.....again..not that it matters.

I think the majority of the priest scandal invloves priests and teenage or almost teenage boys which is purely homosexual predatory activity which is all too common in that community.

I can't see how this guy getting killed in prison could be of much comfort to any of those he was convicted of molesting.
