Geoghan killed in prison (Boston Herald)
Breaking news/by Eric Convey
Saturday, August 23, 2003

Former priest John Geoghan, a notorious pedophile whose case sparked the clergy molestation scandal of the past 18 months, died this afternoon after being attacked at the state prison in Shirley.

``The perpetrator has been isolated,'' said Kelly Nantell, a spokeswoman for the state Deparment of Corrections.

``Our investigation continues,'' she said.

The matter has been referred to the Middlesex County District Attorney Martha Coakley's office.

Geoghan was serving a nine-to-10 year sentence at MCI Shirley for allegedly groping a boy at a Waltham swimming pool.

More than 140 people have claimed they were abused by Geoghan, claiming they were fondled or raped at locations ranging from church rectories to their own homes.

Geoghan would become one the most notorious pedophiles in the country - not only for the extent of his rampage against children but because relevations about his case led to the unraveling of secrecy within the Archdiocese of Boston.

Bernard Cardinal Law's cordial letters to Geoghan, mixing discipline with praise for his priestly service, that pushed many victims from disbelief to outrage.

This is NOT justice. Conservatives believe in rule of law, not vigilanteism. Those of you cheering make me sick, you give conservatives a bad name! He was a scumbag, but he didn't get a death sentence. I hope the perpetrator is caught and prosecuted. Who will they determine they have the "right" to kill next?

You are right. This is not justice. But this is the way of life in American prisons. Always has been. He was a gonner the first day he arrived. And speak for yourself on "..what conservatives believe in." Now let's move along..Nothing to see here...

That's why I'd give them a choice until they started acting it out. I've been around horses and dogs enough to know castration works very well.

We agree on that one, for sure. However, I'm not as comfortable with vigilante justice as I'd like to be. Vigilante justice can run into many unintended consequences, one of which is mob rule.

When the mobs rule, no dissident has any protection. Say good-bye to the right to grieve government largesse. Sort of like Nazi Germany or Pre-WWII Japan.

Adjective challenged, are you?

Yes. Do you feel superior enough yet? :)

Your plan would be a problem once the first drug posession inmate serving 18 months gets murdered...oh wait, too late.

Not that I'm defending child molestors or anything, but your "If you don't want to do the time, don't do the crime" comment is a stereoteypical knuckle-dragger Archie Bunker conservative remark.

And besides, what does prison rape and shanking have to do with "doing the time."

Interesting comment. If I were attracted to children and had acted out on it, I'd at least have the decency to shoot myself in the head. How about you?

The people in prison getting raped and bullied and beaten on are not big bad Leroy serving 20-life for armed robbery or murder.

It's 20 year old non-violent offender Joe Blo who isn't gang-affiliated and is serving 18-24 months for car stereo theft or posessing a few ounces of marijuana.

Geoghan would become one the most notorious pedophiles in the country ...

There was a time when pedophiles and pederasts did not gain notoriety. They did not live that long -certainly not long enough to become priests; these perverts seldom lived longer than a few days after the first abused child told his father/uncle/brother/ about the abuse.

Good glad the bastard was taken out. If I were a victim I would've done it myself or my family and if I was feeling merciful that day just cut off his cock and balls but let him live. F**k them. I applaud this criminal. What did he have to lose he was probably locked up for life sentence anyways? I hope he gets his hands on a few more perverts before he dies and takes a few more with him. BRAVO.

So, it's the traditional non-violent pot smoker committing murder in our prisons? I doubt it. :)

The decent priests would NOT be tarnished or suspected it they, themselves, distanced themselves from the homosexuals in their midst and ceased defending them. Only the decent priests can save their own image with the faithful and in the media. Where is the outcry from within the priesthood if the majority is not homosexual and does not condone what they are doing the Church?

It's the same as the 'good Muslim' argument. IF there are any they are allowing the evil among them to define them in the public eye. If they do not draw a clear line between themselves and the evil, they suffer the same judgement.
I could scream when I see the huge effort made to differentiate between homosexual priests( a contradiction in terms IMO) and pedophile priests. What is the percentage of molested females??

WHAT sex is targeted by these priests?? MALE children and adolescents. Straight pedophiles molest the opposite sex, homosexuals molest the same sex. I will not accept a priest on the altar, representing Jesus and pontificating to me, who is having sex with fellow priests or other men; and I don't think many other Catholics are 'ok' with that either.

The Catholic Church is riddled with homosexuals, all the way up- I fear- to the Vatican. Gay Bishops have been covering for gay priests, Gay Cardinals have been covering for gay Bishops. They have been hiding in the ranks of the priesthood for generations- now many are old and wield considerable power. What if 'cleaning the ranks' involved 50% or more? I don't think they are willing to do that- and until/unless they do the Church as it is now is doomed,IMO.

My family has been Roman Catholic as far back as I can trace them-( the 1500's) and, as sad as it is to say, I wouldn't let any child in my family alone with one. Hypocrisy of the highest order is being practiced by every priest who does not CONDEMN homosexual/pedophiles in the priesthood. The 'good' are being tarnished by their own inaction against evil. Let them suffer the consequences.

I wouldn't let any children in my family alone with 'one'- meaning a priest, not a Roman Catholic.
As for Geoghan. He got off easy.
I hope the guy did him ugly.

I was just curious, we have begun to use the word pedophile or paedophile for anyone who molests under the age of consent children.....again..not that it matters. I think the majority of the priest scandal invloves priests and teenage or almost teenage boys which is purely homosexual predatory activity which is all too common in that community.

The child who he was sentenced for molested was 10 years old. That's pretty young there.

There's a difference between hating criminals and advocating their murder in prison while serving a sentence. That's what theoretically separates us from third world cesspools. Theoretically, of course.
