RICHMOND, Va. (AP) President Bush and the Republicans have trampled civil liberties at home and made the United States a global pariah the past two years, Democratic presidential candidate Carol Moseley Braun said Saturday.
``We've gone since 9-11 into a situation in which folks have figured out if they pander to our fear, they can push an extreme right-wing agenda not only here but abroad. What was supposed to have been a war on terrorism turned into a misadventure, just running out in Iraq, doing whatever,'' said the former U.S. senator from Illinois.
Braun told the Virginia Democratic Party's governing Central Committee that the party has to step up aggressively in challenging Bush not only on domestic issues such as unemployment and school funding but on the handling of the war as well.
``Think about it, when's the last time you heard (Osama) bin Laden's name. Who? Bin who? Been missing,'' she said.
Virginia Republican Party spokesman Shawn M. Smith said laws passed in the wake of the attacks on New York and the Pentagon have made the nation more secure at home and elsewhere.
``It's unfortunate that she's trying to score political points at the expense of our men and women in uniform who are still fighting the war in Iraq. It is because of our military efforts that the Iraqi people are now free,'' Smith said.
``Carol Moseley Braun ought to be more concerned about raising her national name identification above 1 percent than spending time in Virginia,'' Smith said.
Struggling in the polls, Braun said she will receive endorsements Tuesday from the National Organization for Women and the National Women's Political Caucus.
She is the third Democrat within a week to come to strongly Republican Virginia and assail Bush's performance on the war on Iraq and unemployment.
Former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean became the fourth Democrat to visit Virginia this week, starting an eight-city tour and criticizing Bush on foreign policy at an evening rally in Falls Church.
``North Korea is about to become a nuclear power because he won't sit down and talk to somebody he doesn't like,'' Dean said. ``If you want to be tough on defense, you have to do better than a foreign policy based on petulance.''
Braun, who served for two years as U.S. ambassador to New Zealand, said Bush had squandered international good will and sympathy for the United States after Sept. 11, 2001, by spurning the appeals of allies and attacking Iraq.
``Remember all those people we thumbed our noses at and now we're saying, 'Well, maybe we do need you all's help after all?''' she said.
``At a time when the challenges facing us are global in nature, we can't solve SARS and AIDS and poverty and globalization going it by ourselves and telling the rest of the world to 'bring it on,''' Braun said.
Braun also said the Republican Congress's failure to provide sufficient funding had made a mockery of Bush's No Child Left Behind initiative for improving learning among at-risk students. ``In South Carolina, they call it No Behind Left,'' she said.
She also repeated her call for overhauling health care in the United States to a ``single-payer'' system underwritten by the federal government and administered by private health care companies and doctors. ^ <

Do stuff a sock into it Carol! The truth is America is a LOT safer since 9-11. And despite what the media is reporting, the situation on the ground in Iraq is for the most part stable. What I marvel at is not that we don't have problems but that we have so few of them to deal with. And I guess you missed that news or chose to ignore it in the name of political expediency, where we caught Iraq's Vice President and snagged an Al Qaeda big shot named Hanbali. Your failure to credit President Bush will successes in the WOT reflects poorly on your candidacy for President.

Braun = blah, blah, blah. Meaningless drivel.

``Think about it, when's the last time you heard (Osama) bin Laden's name. Who? Bin who? Been missing,'' she said. And this is a BAD thing?
She is so dumb, she doesn't know that it is better to have a sworn enemy "missing" than in your face all the time.

At best she may be a future VP.
At worst she guarantees her seat in Congress forever.

I heard that Carole likes Blacks as long as they don't inhabit HER neighborhood.
Its unreal how the media and the Dims con the American people into thinking that her and Rev Al are qualified and respectable leaders, while Bush is a lying, stupid, dangerous incompetent.

Oh, Carol..how many times since 911 has the US been attacked by terrorist?...hmmmmm?
I shudder to think how may plots have been foiled that we don't even know about.

I've never heard that here. And, if things are so bad, why are several schools being replaced with brand new ones? The HS my daughter attends is being rebuilt.
Yeah, everything just sucks. That's why the WalMart down the road is being enlarged into a SuperCenter. That's why many of the roads around here are being widened. That's why the place I work at is running a help-wanted ad.

And despite what the media is reporting, the situation on the ground in Iraq is for the most part stable. This is exactly what Harold Ford (Leftwinger) said on Imus the other day. The media is unfairly reporting the real situation in Iraq.
Like this should be some surprise...
