People complained about mechanical production replacing human labor, but in the long run it meant products were manufactured more efficiently at a lower cost resulting a higher standard of living for all.

Made by machines and made by people is still manufacturing.

So what if the slave labor wages in China mean some low tech manufacturing jobs go there. It frees up Americans for better paying high tech jobs, and the low price China products raise our standard of living. Just like we had our own slaves.

What better paying high tech jobs? And if they weren't moving to India, what do those high paying high tech jobs depend on? High tech equipment. And where is the high tech equipment and/or the components thereof made?

You should get out more. I told you my local electoral predicament and how I vote in local elections(try to vote for the best person in the local demo primary, since more often than not the R is usually unopposed during the primary and usually vote for the R in the general).

That is the thing with many people who support free trade, they in many cases support it because that is what they think is the "party line". As I keep on hammering, their talking points on free trade do not go beyond what Limbaugh and the WSJ editorial pages say, yet in so many threads here on FR, their debate style is as snotty as anything one would see at DU. The dogmatic free traders get so hysterical that in debats, they resort to calling people "brown shirts", thus invoking Goodwins Law.

No, Japan proved to have their own problems. In any case, that was a different problem than the current outsourcing of jobs to low-wage countries. In the case of Japan, it was thought by many that they were beating us in straight head-to-head competition, through better management techniques and a more dedicated workforce. In the case of low-wage countries, however, they are beating us, to a large degree, because they have a much lower cost of living. They can hire workers at salaries that workers in this country could not survive on. Could you compete with someone whose cost of living was one fourth of yours? Under these conditions, free trade does not represent the freedom to hire the most skilled and dedicated workers. It represents the freedom of corporations to use arbitrage to benefit from the differences in the cost of living in different countries.
