Rudy Giuliani Likely Will Back Schwarzenegger

Was Supporting Simon, Who Dropped Out

Aug 25, 2003 1:24 pm US/Pacific NEW YORK (AP) Former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani is likely to endorse Arnold Schwarzenegger in the California governor's race.

A source close to Giuliani says the former mayor has yet to officially endorse anyone in the campaign to unseat California Governor Gray Davis. But Giuliani's support for Schwarzenegger became likely after fellow GOP candidate Bill Simon dropped out of the race Saturday. Simon is a close friend of Giuliani.

The source says Giuliani may not have time to campaign with Schwarzenegger prior to the Oct. 7 election.

Guiliani is currently in Australia on a speaking tour.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Pataki Group Staging Fund-Raiser For Arnold
$1,000 A Head For Big Apple Benefit
Aug 25, 2003 1:20 pm US/Pacific ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) Gov. George Pataki's fund-raising team is planning a $1,000-a-person event in Manhattan to benefit actor Arnold Schwarzenegger's campaign to become governor of California.
An invitation, a copy of which was obtained Monday by The Associated Press, asks potential donors to serve on the host committee for the ``New Yorkers for Arnold Schwarzenegger'' event. General chairmen for the function are required to donate or raise at least $100,000.
Meanwhile, a top adviser to New York's Republican governor, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Pataki was expected to head to California in late September to personally campaign for Schwarzenegger.
There was no immediate estimate Monday on how much the New York City event for Schwarzenegger might raise.
The fund-raising invitation was sent by Robert Wood Johnson IV, an heir to the Johnson & Johnson health care fortune and owner of the New York Jets football team.
``We are a group of New Yorkers who are working to see to it that the current occupant of the governor's mansion in Sacramento is recalled and Arnold Schwarzenegger is elected,'' Johnson's invitation said.
Both Johnson and Pataki are members of President Bush's ``Ranger'' group a designation given those who have raised at least $200,000 for the president's re-election campaign.
Pataki's chief fund-raisers, Cathy Blaney and Patrick Donohue, are arranging the event, tentatively set for Sept. 18, that will include Schwarzenegger.
Also being planned is a host committee dinner after the general reception. In addition to the $100,000 chairmen positions being offered, donors can get on the host committee as co-chairmen (a $50,000 commitment) or as vice chairmen (a $20,000 commitment).
The invitation informs potential donors that individuals or corporations can donate up to $21,200 directly to ``Californians for Schwarzenegger'' or make unlimited contributions to the ``Schwarzenegger Total Recall Committee.''
Within five days of Schwarzenegger's Aug. 6 announcement of his candidacy to replace Democratic Gov. Gray Davis, Pataki was throwing his political muscle behind the body builder-turned-actor-turned-politician's effort.
On Aug. 11, Pataki's fund-raising team staged a private ``prospecting'' luncheon for Schwarzenegger at the posh Four Seasons restaurant in New York City where he got to meet with potential major donors.
At least your honest. If Arnold is elected, I never want to hear the Republicans invoke Ronald Reagan's name again, because the party would never elect him today.
I'm just waiting for the Democratic Party to dissolve into fringe Communism, the GOP to then absorb all the non-radical elements of the collapsed Democratic Party and thus supplant it as center-left; and for a new Federalist/Constitutionalist/Conservative Party (pick any) to emerge as the new center-right party.
Too bad it will take a while before I get a political party I can vote for affirmatively.
Come on, that is the clincher! I remember when that happened last fall that it was what sealed it for Gov Simon. Oops.
Well ok, this endorsement isn't really big in CA, but its no big deal, he's just in the northeast vacationing with his wife's uncle anyways. Learning how best to not answer direct questions about policy. That Teddy, hooo doggie he's good! Do you think they like movies?
Some of the "true" conservatives or whatever you all are calling yourselves today thought Rudy was wonderful after 9/11, but now that he is supporting Arnold he is called a RINO with Pataki.
Neither man is a Republican in Name Only and have both given a lot to this Country! You "true", "real", "purist" or whatever else name you are going to call yourselves now should be ashamed to call such fine men Republicans in Name Only.
The difference between these two gentlemen and some of you is that they always vote and don't threaten to stay home if they don't agree with a candidate 100%! They want to win elections not whine about it.
The real RINO's as some of you like to throw around now, are those voters who don't vote because a candidate is not 100% of what they deem is suitable to vote for in an election. Good thing those of you who call these fine gentlemen RINO's don't have much say in the Republican Party! That would be disaster!
Most of those who call others RINOs don't care about the Republican Party or about California. Their smugness is their only concern.
Why don't you address someone you are criticizing the next time you step up on your soap box. Just a thought.
Its not just FReepers who are going to be staying home, its conservatives we don't know and have no contact with that will simply not vote for someone with the positions of (R)nold, and I don't care that it isn't fair, or not how you advance your agenda, or any of that BS, its the way CA has been since Reagan. I think we are trying to do you a favor by alerting you beforehand that a guy only getting 22%, with an astronomical 40% negative rating, and merely 16% who haven't made up their minds yet-that this Electability refrain is a freight train to nowhere.
I did agree with one thing you said; They want to win elections
That much is patently obvious. Too bad the Demos aren't biting like everyone predicted, he has a whoping 7% coming from them, and this is only a efw weeks after the brilliant Tonight Show announcement and before he's gotten into much offensive position-taking. Perhaps you shouldn't be insulting "All" the Conservatives on this board about not voting for him, they seem to be the only ones who are.
