While failed actor-turned-director Deepak Tijori's 'Oops!' may have done little to salvage his box office fortunes, male strippers in Delhi can barely hide their delight.
According to Ali G Reza, the man whose life reportedly inspired the film, the demand for Full Monty has more than trebled since 'Oops!' was released. "Of late Delhi has become the most lucrative for male strippers, leaving Mumbai far behind", he claims.
Reza says that while male striptease may be a novelty for man-on-the-street, it's been a staple at high-society dos for a long time now. "What 'Oops!' did was to bring adult entertainment out of the closet. But make no mistake - such shows take place all the time at private farmhouses and glitzy hotel rooms. I myself have been performing in Mumbai for the last seven years. The thought of coming to Delhi occurred since more and more new opportunities are now available," gushes Reza who recently gave the capital's PYTs an eyeful of his well-honed body at celebrity hairstylist Sylvie's birthday party.
The 27-year-old exotic dancer admits a debt of gratitude to Tijori for bringing his hitherto secretive calling into the limelight. "On an average I receive over twenty calls a month from Delhi-based clients. Of these I accept no more than four to five assignments at a time. In fact beside myself there are six more male strippers from Mumbai who shuttle between the two metros on a regular basis. And there's plenty of work for everyone. A show can now fetch anything between Rs 20,000 to 50,000 for the artiste", he proudly proclaims.
And Delhi's beautiful people are not exactly shying away from paying the price. "Different strokes for different folks - people need not always have the same idea about entertainment. It's all about what makes you happy. There are in fact many who find male striptease very erotic but are reluctant to admit it openly," says Sylvie.
But success in his chosen profession doesn't come cheap, insists Reza. According to him: "There's a certain cost involved to selling your charms. A stripper's body is his goods in trade and one spends close to Rs 3000 every day to maintain an attractive physique. After all there's no better turn-on than a rugged look, chiselled abs and bulging biceps."
And, apparrantly, that's not all.
Doesn't look happy or like he's having fun.
Maybe we should send Ricki Martin over.
