Iodine tablets or resublimated iodine crystals are very effective at rendering suspect water supplies potable. An easier and more practical method would be water filters, and water purifiers. Katadyn make the cadillac of portable filters, using ceramic, down to 0.2 microns. I consider that stuff a backup, but a very important backup. It's in my "grab my bag and get out of Dodge" bag. For easin' back and listening to the radio, I prefer the bottled stuff, stored in a nice, cool basement.
