NEWPORT BEACH — Dennis Rodman was arrested today on suspicion of public intoxication, after deputies got a tip that he was driving his high- powered boat "Sexual Chocolate" while drunk, officials said. Rodman, 42, was taken into custody shortly before 4 p.m. at the dock area at 3010 Lafayette Ave., said Orange County sheriff's Lt. Hayward Miller.
The former rebounding star for the Detroit Pistons, San Antonio Spurs, Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks was booked into the Newport Beach Police Department jail, but was released just before 8 p.m.
He told a news reporters that he had not been drinking and was not on the boat. It was unclear whether Rodman was given a court date.
Rodman's attorney, Paul Meyer, downplayed the incident earlier.
"As usual, I expect far more publicity than this matter is worth," Meyer said. "I do not expect to see charges in this matter."
Sheriff's Harbor Patrol deputies got an anonymous tip that Rodman was "operating a boat in an intoxicated state," Miller said. The deputies confronted Rodman and arrested him, Miller said.
The 6-foot-8-inch Rodman, who played in 23 games for the Lakers in 1999, had docked and was trying to tie up his high-powered boat near The Cannery restaurant when deputies approached.
"His gait, if you will, was not steady," Miller said, adding that Rodman's speech and ability to stand were affected.
Jim Amormino of the Orange County Sheriff's Department said Rodman appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.
"The detectives spoke with him," Amormino said. "At that time, Mr. Rodman actually fell to the ground. He was in a state, unable to care for himself."
A police lieutenant said Rodman was held a few hours to give him a chance to "sober up."
He was accompanied by his wife, Michelle Moyer, and a friend when he left, according to reports.
