WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush will announce on Sunday night that he plans to ask Congress for $87 billion to fund the U.S. military deployment in Iraq and pay for reconstruction, a Republican source said.
The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the money would fund U.S. military operations in Iraq and reconstruction over the coming budget year.
The figure includes assistance for Afghanistan. Bush was to make the request in an 8:30 p.m. EDT address to the nation, the source said.
The figure was at the high end of expectations. Some members of Congress said earlier they expected Bush to get what he asked for but wanted him to detail how long U.S. troops would remain in Iraq and outline a strategy for bringing them home. (snip)

Why not 86? Why not 88?
To: Senator Pardek
Odd numbers are more palatable.
To: Senator Pardek
Is that all? Well, 86 billion less for new welfare and mediscare programs... oh way, we'll just run up deficits and have BOTH!

We're already $598 billion in the hole for this year... Another $87 billion on top of that?
Does this man have any concept of money whatsoever?

hmmmmm, another anonomous source. Let me know if he actually asks for this. I am getting the feeling that a lot of garbage is being put out by the left, in the name of this mysterious "Republican Source."

That's exactly what he said. 87 billion...

Does this man have any concept of money whatsoever?Short answer? No. I heard it on Fox right before he started to talk, something around 60 billion for day to day operations and another 20 billion for something else. But who cares? It's just 'paperwork' to the administration now. God only knows how we're going to pay for it...

$87 billion is over $300 for every man woman and child in the country. I wonder when parents should break the news to their young children that they are going to work an extra few years to pay for this.
$87 billion here, $87 billion there, and you are starting to talk about real money.

Man, I'd heard that employers were getting stingy about pay, but I never thought it had gotten that bad.
To: Vis Numar
Does this man have any concept of money whatsoever? You think its bad now? We're going to really bend over next year as Bush offers the "Republican alternative" to whatever new entitlment(s) the rat nominee campaigns on.
To: Vis Numar
Does this man have any concept of money whatsoever?Sure, he also has the concept of Americans jumping out of windows from the 87th floor down pat and the trillion dollar hit the economy took from 9/11.
The CIC has drawn the jihadists into the free fire zone of Iraq and you want us to quit and run now? Kill'em all and if it costs money to do that, that's the price we pay.
Hopefully, in his next budget he will spend some more by re-establishing two of the lost divisions that the Army requires.

Ok, I am eating crow, but my point stands that we have gotten a lot of false info into the media to try to hurt Bush and his policies. I blame the 9 or 10 dwarfs and Snow White thighs and their attempt to regain power at all cost. Which will be more costly than anything we will spend in Iraq.

Another $87 billion + $66 billion = economic implosion. Keynesian enconomics or not this budget fallacy is about to show it's teeth.

...and the walls came tumbling down.

I wonder when parents should break the news to their young children that they are going to work an extra few years to pay for this. Money well spent. Of course we can just adopt the policy of the past two decades, nest and absorb whatever else the jihadists have in mind for us and then pay the bills at their leisure.

Hey, I'd be more than happy to retract my statements. It would actually give me a little hope. However I'm afraid I'm not going to have to. Do you honestly believe that there are 20,000 liters each of several WMDs along with 30,000 warheads to deliver them that they somehow have overlooked?

It's possible they overlooked 20 fighter jets buried in the desert.
But that's neither here nor there. It's not the quantity of finished product I'm interested in. It's what they were capable of and planning on do with it.
Anybody who doesn't believe that Saddam didn't have CB weapons and the will to use them is living in fantasy land.

want every man, woman and child dead in this country like these terrorists want That is a separate issue, which is - was there any connection at all between Sept 11 and Iraq. Most analysts say no. If there was, then the whole story we have been told - about Afghanistan and the Taliban - is off.

You don't see the whole picture,, Is the President a liar?,, are there no terrorists fighting us in Iraq?,, if we leave do you not think that Iraq will be a terrorist haven for many different terrorists groups who anyone of them would be glad to "jihad" themselves with any weapon they could find against our people and cities here?,, let's cut their asses over there,, we are killing them by the hundreds all over Iraq and Afghanistan with our military,, isn't that a beautiful thing?,, If we can gather them in one place in mass they make better targets,,, killem all,,,

87 billion or a trillion who cares,, the very survial of our country is at stake I think Ted Kennedy used that same line when talking about universal health care.
If you think this effort in Iraq is so worth the money being spent then why dont you have the courage to suggest that American taxes should be raised to pay for it?

Frankly, I'd rather spend that in Iraq to crush the muslim extremists than the same amount on welfare here in the good 'ole USA so that unemployed women living in 4 br apartments can pump out more illigimate children. What do you think?

"...then the whole story we have been told - about Afghanistan and the Taliban - is off."
Perhaps the whole story has not {and cannot) yet be revealed. I believe Mr. Bush when he said this War on Terror would take 10 years or longer. I believe that Wahabism in Saudi Arabia and the mullahs in Iran are the ultimate targets in this war, for they are the cesspool breeding grounds for those who seek the destruction of Western Civilization. I believe this war cannot be won unless the nations of Iraq and, to a lesser degree, Afganistan become western allies. Yes, it is all about oil; the oil from a non-OPEC Iraq which will free us from Saudi dependency to ultimately win this war against the extremists, with which the Saudi government has aligned itself. The enemy should never be given the war plan in advance.

Funny how Republicans are so very concerned about deficit spending when a Democrat is in the White House yet have no problem piling up the debt for their children when a Republican president goes on a spending spree.
