The depressing foreshadowing put a real downer on it for me however, as I watched the Camp David scenes...
Wolfowitz position: The mission must define the coalition.
Powell position: The coalition defines the mission.
Powell won, to the detriment of all Americans. So the war on terror loses momentum daily, and we kowtow to terrorists like Arafat to avoid ruffling the feathers of those Powell considers our allies (but who really want to see us attacked again)
All the stuff with the UN is simply a way to get the world's attention directed to the debate and to ease the minds of a few allies. Some countries, like Italy, cannot supply troops unless there is a UN mandate (that is in the Italian constitution, written after WWII).
I don't object to having the UN send people for border guards, etc. I also have no doubt that the command will remain under US control, like Korea.
