The New Nixon? The specter of 1962 haunts Schwarzenegger's campaign.

Is Arnold Schwarzenegger another Ronald Reagan? Actually, his campaign is showing more similarities to Richard Nixon's failed 1962 bid for the California governorship--which ended with him telling the press corps, "You won't have Richard Nixon to kick around anymore"--than with Mr. Reagan's upset victory for the same office four years later.

"...but the damage was done."

Buffet should change his name to Buffoon. He knows as little about politics as he does about the state budget and public finance. But he knows all about liberalism and has no problem with helping Arnold become governor.

>>>"So I turned to my friend . . . and said, 'I am a Republican!' This is the philosophy I believe in."

Arnold is pro-abortion, pro-gun control and pro-gay rights. Those aren't the positions of the GOP. The Republican platform is pro-life, pro-2nd amenmdment and doesn't support special rights for gays. Two of the bedrock principles of the Republican Party are, supply side tax cuts and limited government achieved through spending cuts.

California's economic and financial problems can be solved through fiscal responsibility. That means cutting spending and a good place to start would be to begin addressing waste, fraud and abuse in the state budget. Also reductions in the sttaes marginal income tax rates would stimulate the California economy, encouraging spending, savings and investment.

I look at California's problems as a win-win situation. If the state is pulled out of the pit of despair it presently occupies, I can rejoice in my home states' success. If not, my adopted home state (Arizona) will be the beneficiary of the emigration of business out of the golden state.

Personally I think that the best thing that could happen for hte Republican Party is for Bustemonte to win. He and the Rat legislature will drive the California economy so far down that the Republicans will be poised in '06 to take back the legislature and governor's office. Until that point, just let them do what they do naturally, screw up royally.

The Nixon comparison (for Schwarzenegger) that may be more apt than the 1962 vintage is the 1968-73 (or so) version: conservative enough on foreign policy and such, but not on domestic policy, including spending. My personal jury is still out on that one.

This article seems to imply that Joe Shell ran in the general election and took on the role of spoiler. In fact, Shell only ran in the primary. However, the bitterness of the primary fight did, indeed, leave the party divided.

Another factor in Nixon's loss was the Cuban Missile Crisis, which broke out about two weeks before election day. Nixon was one of Republicans who got "Cubanized" that year.
