Er, a car with a standard boot (trunk!) as opposed to a 5-door "hatchback". I dunno what you call hatchbacks in the US, these are the ones where the tailgate and the rear window is one hinged structure. A Ford Mondeo (Contour?) is a typical example.

"Saloons" Was confusing to me too. Seemed pretty hard to drive ;)
