Sisters axed in Muslim 'honor killing'

Two sisters were hacked to death by their Muslim brothers in Jordan in an "honor killing" that came one day after the country's parliament rejected a bill imposing tougher sentences for the crime.

The Jordan Times newspaper said the brothers used axes to kill the unidentified sisters, aged 20 and 27, according to a BBC report.

The brothers, now in detention, admitted they carried out the killing to uphold the "family honor."

The practice is known in many Muslim communities as a way of applying justice to a woman deemed to have harmed a family's reputation.

The Times said the 27-year-old sister left home two years ago to marry a man without her family's permission. Three months ago, her 20-year-old sister ran away to join her.

Jordanian officials said someone tipped off the brothers about where the sisters were living. The men went into their home with axes and hacked them to death.

"It was a brutal scene," the official said, according to the paper. "One victim's head was nearly cut clean off."

On Sunday, the Jordanian parliament rejected a bill that would strengthen relevant laws, which currently mete out sentences as light as six months in prison for people guilty of honor killings.

The Jordanian paper said, officially, 12 women are reported to have been killed this year for reasons of "family honor."

Honor killing is a regional tradition, in a region which happens to be populated by Muslims at present. Similar to the veil, it is rooted in millenia old history.

It's unlikely that an immigrant from that region would carry out an honor killing in the USA, simply because there isn't any peer pressure to preserve the family's honor. But it is possible that it could happen.

I think "shotgun weddings" are the closest US tradition, however nearly extinct.

Despite the many reports such as this coming from Islamic countries, our leaders still appear to believe the Islamic Arabs, Afghanis etc. think just like us.

A shotgun wedding is a rational answer to a family's desire to to maximise the prospects of its female offspring.

There is no rational or even sane interpretation that can be made of such, badly mislabled, honor killings. These acts are a sign of a SERIOUSLY ill culture, one that must be cured...or euthanized.

I agree that what is described here in this article is a SERIOUSLY ill culture.

Yet honor killings nor stoniings are prescribed by Islam. It's a regional tradition, a remnant probably an ancient sort of birth control and std prevention.

Although no culture is free of disease that I know. Could this be a sicker sort of abortion? If there were a hundred cases of this per year, then which way do the scales tip when compared to a place where millions of abortions are performed in a year?

Yes it's dispicable and horrid. I have no argument with that. But when we look at them through our window, we should not ignore the faint reflection we see of ourselves, staring back at us.

How come Islamic nations never use birth control? Is there some kind of contest going on? Just look at the Paleostinans. Their population way exceeds the carrying capacity on the West Bank which is arid and Gaza which has decent rainfall. That's why they are all on welfare of some kind. UN welfare, Saudi welfare, Hamas welfare etc. The population of Saudi Arabia is 26 million in a barren desert. Saudi is one huge desert. Population is way past carrying capacity there too but at least they have the $$$ to import shiploads of live goats and sheep for Halal slaughter and consumption. Oz and NZ send these ships to Saudi Arabia and other oil rich Muslim nations.
