Dumb and Dumber: Robbers Foil Themselves

MISHAWAKA, Ind. (AP) -- Two would-be robbers left an Indiana convenience store empty-handed after getting into an argument about the contents of a note they handed to the clerk.

The two men entered the 7-Eleven store in Mishawaka, just east of South Bend, early Tuesday morning.

They left the store and came back a few minutes later. One of them handed the clerk a note saying, in part, "put it in the bag."

When the clerk said she didn't understand what that meant, the man who handed her the note said he didn't know either because his buddy wrote it.

The two men began to argue and left the store. They are still at large.

Chuckle. Yah almost gotta feel sorry for guys like that. The cop that catches them ought to at least give them a chance to do it over and get it right.

Pretty funny that the clerk and robber #2 were unable to improvise what was supposed to happen in a robbery, and were stumped without a holdup note to rely on.

For some strange reason I agree with you and can you arrest someone for being this dumb?

Some people just aren't very good at public speaking. :=)

Reminds me of the Woody Allen movie, where he hands a bank teller a note and she says she can't understand it. Woody Allen's character and the teller get into a discussion about what the illegible note says, needless to say, he winds up getting arrested.

hehehe... good question. At what point is an attempted robbery not in fact an attempt?

If the clerk didn't understand the note... then she arguably didn't even know for sure that she was being robbed. A good attorney could argue that they gave up before actually communicating the robbery attempt to the clerk. So it wasn't a 'bona fide' attempt.

bwaahahaha... They definitely need a do-over. That way the charges could be more clear. The REALLY funny thing is... if the cop took them back to the store to try again with him standing right there... they'd probably DO it.

Methinks the clerk may not be so dumb, but thought the perps might be. But, maybe I'm wrong.

I heard, think it was true, about a robber who wrote a holdup note on a bank deposit slip. After waiting for a while in line, he got frustrated and walked across the street to another bank.

When he got there, the teller told him that they couldn't accept the note as it was written on the other bank's deposit slip.

The robber was dejected and headed back to the first bank. Meanwhile, the cops were called by the second teller and he was caught as he was waiting in line at the original bank. Probably urban legend, but given the stupidity of today's criminals, possibly quite true.

This is so funny. I went to college there and know of at least two 7-11's in Mishawaka that this might have happened at.

I heard that too, as well as one where the clerk made the criminal fill out a withdrawal slip and present identification, which he did.

The recent bank robbery in which the perp wrote his hold-up note on the back of his own resume -- with his real name and current home address -- and left it with the teller, is definitely real, so I wouldn't be surprised if your story is too.
