Near the end of WWII there was a lot of talk about relieving Halsey of command after he got caught in the second typhoon, but becuase the media had made such a hero out of home, he was not dismissed for politcal reasons.

I've never heard of an Admiral McCain involved I that particular matter - but then again, I'm not a military historian either.
