I don't think so, Gabz. Hopefully, Isabel will amaze us and turn out to sea. At least that's what I'm hoping for all of you folks.

Earthquakes are a heck of a lot easier. They hit. You assess the damage. Get out of the house, and get into all of the EQ stuff you've been saving for as long as you can remember. I still keep a pair of shoes by the side of the bed. Old habits are hard to break.

As you could, apparently, easily enlighten everybody, "they," about who you are referring, actually produce probability tables of storm tracks.

Late last night, "they" produced a table still showing odds that the hurricane could still turn left and "make landfall" in South Carolina on up into Thursday of this week.

But then, you probably knew that.

"They" actually go to a lot of trouble to explain the variability of their discussions, forecasts, and predictions. In fact, at great length, there are many thick textbooks on this, because the weather, in general, is a useful source of data for probability studies which are the curriculum on up through completing your Ph.D. at university.

But then, you probably already knew that.

In a way I guess you're right about earthquakes - you never get any warning.

This has been going on for how many days now, and it's still 2 days away........it's tiring - big time.

But switiching weather bugs is real easy - just plug in a differnt zip code and it gives you that forecast!!!

At the 11 PM report it was 1 mph short of category III, if I recall the scale correctly. Since then, the western side seems to have developed and in the last half hour the eye started clearing again.

I got some of those puppy pads for my boneheaded dachshund. He thought they were little cushy mattresses put there for his comfort.

You have a warped sense of the world.

Thank you. I am sure it is at least different from yours.

I don't doubt you, after all, I was not in Winston-Salem but there was very little rain in my area which was to the East of the eye. We did get a big downpour about two days after Hugo and many people here will insist that they came as one. I am not surprised that people merge those two events but I was rather astounded to meet a man in Myrtle Beach who had moved down form the north and hear him insist that a hurricane was nothing to be concerned about because Hugo did almost no damage in Myrtle Beach. That is ignorance personified, he really didn't have a clue!

Volcanoes and earthquakes must make you feel oh-so-holy.

Uh... most people think hurricanes are bad

I'm not going to take the time to explain what I meant to such sarcastic and cynical people.

I enjoy FR but think it is sad when people make personal attacks or post snide replies to something someone said.

Get a life.

Sorry you feel that way. I enjoy FR too, and especially enjoy the fact people can say anything they want. That, after all, is what free speech is. I especially enjoy those posts to me which point out things other's disagree with me about, even if they think I'm a sarcastic old cynic. (Although I am far from a cynic, I don't care if others think so.)

I am glad you were able to post something you appreciate and feel very strongly about, even though I disagree with it. I'm even glad you can criticize me for expressing my opinion, although I'm not sure what you are concerned about. It's only my opinion, one person, and almost everyone else is going to agree with you, not me. I'm sure I receive a lot more criticism on FR than you do. (In my case, it's what I expect, because my opinions are seldom popular ones.)

I would appreciate you're answering a question for me, however. Why are all Christians so thin-skinned? No one can say anything that is the least bit controversial or critical about anything they say or do and they are suddenly all defensive and complaining about being attacked.

Let this sarcastic old cynic give you a suggestion. There is nothing anyone can say to you or about you that can hurt you in any way, unless you let it. It's what my mother taught me when I was a little boy. "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me."

Don't Christian mothers teach their kids that? (I know "minority" mothers don't, else we wouldn't need all these laws to protect them from "hate speech." Good grief!)

Now, just one other thing, if you don't mind. Except in those rare cases where Freepers actually know each other, it is impossible to make a, "personal attack," on anyone. You don't know who I am and I don't know who you are. There is no way either of us could attack the other; if we could attack anything, it would only be a "screen-name." You certainly aren't your screen-name, are you?

I never attack either people or "screen-names," I attack only ideas. However, ideas do not exist independently, they only exist as concepts held by individuals. It is impossible, I suppose, to attack ideas without those, whose ideas they are, assuming they are being attacked. It's too bad, but I never go out of my way to alleviate the paranoia of the thin-skinned. They would be happier if they just learned to ignore me. They won't. Guess why?

You need not explain yourself in my view. I think such raw spectacles of nature hauntingly magnificent reminders of the grand scheme of creation.

"Bach's Toccata and FUG-gew in D minor"

I was watching a Boston, MA station one night and their "two-fer" anchorette (minority and woman) was doing a report on a museum story. She ended her "reading" by saying in an "I am so smart and you are so stupid" voice, "The background music was, of course, by 'Choppin'."

I'm all for free speech and believe that this forum promotes that ideal by its very existence however I believe there are tactful ways of expressing one's opinion. Your comment about volcanoes making me feel "oh-so-holy" was far from tactful and was taken as an insult to my humbleness towards God's creation.

I don't believe it is an issue of being thin-skinned. It is more of an issue of speaking negatively about one's faith or God that elicits such a response.

You are partially correct about the things that people say not being able to hurt you. I will agree that one cannot let every little insult bother them however one would have to be a totally callous, cold, unemotional and without passion to let every hurtful word slip by without a strong response. It is our nature to be protective of values and ideals that we hold dearest and to defend those values and ideals with every ounce of honor we possess.

I don't know you personally but for some reason I feel sorry for you. It must be very sad and lonely to not know your Creator. Why bother going through 60 or 70 years of living only to decay back into dirt? I think you draw your cynicism from the emptiness in your heart and it must make you feel better to think of all those "kooky" Christians going about God's work?

We'll see in the end.

Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.

One would have to be a totally callous, cold, unemotional and without passion to let every hurtful word slip by without a strong response.

I do not think so.

Mark 14:60-61 And the high priest stood up in the midst, and asked Jesus, saying, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee? But he held his peace, and answered nothing....

Mark 15:3-5 And the chief priests accused him of many things: but he answered nothing. And Pilate asked him again, saying, Answerest thou nothing? behold how many things they witness against thee. But Jesus yet answered nothing; so that Pilate marvelled.

Certianly you would not accuse Jesus of being, "totally callous, cold, unemotional and without passion to let every hurtful word slip by without a strong response."

Mat. 5:44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

Col. 4:6 Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.

It must be very sad and lonely to not know your Creator ...

Isn't that a little presumptuous. Since you don't know me personally, you certainly are not in a position to know with whom I am or am not acquainted.

Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.

Mat. 12:37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

Mat 7:21-24 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, ....

John 5:28-29 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.
