Oakley (AP) - Lisa McClelland says she isn't a racist. She says her campaign for a Caucasian Club at Freedom High School in the eastern Contra Costa County town of Oakley is a move toward diversity, not bigotry.

McClelland says everyone is invited - and nobody will be excluded.

Do you feel a bond with the Aboriginies of Australia? They're caucasian as well. Have you ever been to Europe? Have you ever been to the West Indies? You just assume you'll get along with people based on their color. How do you know you're meeting someone white anyway? You going to ask?

I used to think that until I moved into a "diverse" neighborhood. We aren't shooting at each other but the cold war is absolutely nasty.

Hispanic means only what you want it to mean.
Just find on Spaniard who wants that epithet and I'll buy you a coke.

It most correctly applies to spanish speaking, mixed race, people from the new world (Hispanola).

Latino, same thing; "Latin" means different things in Italy than it does in Honduras.

Chicano applies to US born of mexican/mestizo descent.

Mestizo ain't Castilian. (he said with a lisp)

Americans are generally hoodwinked into thinking in the broad sense when someone uses any of these terms: but Cubans & Puerto Ricans typically don't want to be considered with the rest, Spaniards and Portugese certainly don't because they are European. When you look at the literature or talk to the advocates, those groups are NOT included in the mix.

What is wrong with kids today? When I was in school, if I wanted to start a cacausion club or any other club I'd just do it. I sure as heck would not go submitting any plan to any principal.

Seriously, what is the big deal here? You make up a flyer, announce the meeting place and your done with it. You have your club. Don't need no principal to tell you that you can have a club.

Unless of course your trying to make a federal case out of it.

There are white people living in the South who have way more in common with black Southerners

Bingo!

I’d rather spend an afternoon watching football with a Southern black buddy than golfing with an aloof white New Englander.

On the other hand, I do have a strong bond with my fellow Americans regardless of race and geography, and I’ve felt it very poignantly while traveling overseas.

There is nothing sweeter than listening to an American tourist’s accent after spending several weeks traveling in Asia and encountering very few English speakers.

Similarly, when I traveled through Central America for a few months, I remember arriving to Panama and going to Diablo Heights where many Americans lived. I stopped on a Wednesday nigh at a small church about to conduct a bible study, and I was regaled with a chorus of Americans speaking all of our dialects, from Georgia drawl to California dude-speak.

The church members invited me to a church picnic on Sunday afternoon, and that was the most memorable day of that vacation trip. So much camaraderie, fellowship, friendship, and loyalty among Americans of different colors and races, mostly families of American servicemen.

On the other hand, I never felt any strong bond to foreigners who happened to be white. I tend to bond easily with people who share my ethnicity, language, culture, hometown, etc, but I have never felt any strong bond to people solely based on their pale skin.

excellent post... I have nothing much to add except I say the same things to black people who are into their 'black race' and 'I'm black and I'm proud' rubbish. It's just superficial feel good crap on both sides. I've started European history and culture clubs and never had a problem. Whatever... I never felt a need to imitate my enemies.

I thought this was an interesting idea, but the NAACP guy made me mad with his comments. I ranted about it (at great length) here.

One question. What is a "blog?"

A blog is basically a web-log - an online diary if you will. It is an interesting way to express yourself (and improve your writing).

Lisa McClelland was interviewed by a local tv reporter. She was asked if the group might be seen as in alliance with the Aryan brethren....She responded that she didn't know who they were.

She also stated that no one would be excluded from the Caucasion club based on race, ethnicity, etc.

The reporter also interviewed Black students at the school and they saw no problem with the proposed club. One Black student responded with, "There shouldn't be ANY clubs for races...we're all Americans!" :-)

As an officer in the Black Student Union in my high school way before this young lady's birth I have to grant her the freedom to have this Caucasian club.

Same thing with the Hispanic club at my school. It's maybe 40-50% hispanic. The rest are just there for the email list with party locations given...
