The Constitution and other charters that symbolize America's birth belong to the United States, but the "ideals they proclaim belong to all mankind," including people in the turbulent Middle East, President Bush said Wednesday as he unveiled the newly restored documents.

Too bad none of the branches of the federal government bother adhering to it any more...

The symbols are shiny, the ideals are dead. Only in America.

For the past two years, conservators have been doing preservation work on the Constitution, Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights

I thought it had gone straight to the shredder.

"...too bad they don't bother adhering to it anymore..."

reading your response, and that of AngrySpud just before yours (waited in line to see the original, and greatly moved when he did...) I am struck by the dichotomy of these two posts. On the one hand, words express a feeling much as I would, should I see their motivation before me. On the other hand, the modern-day weariness that seems to border on cynicism - itself a reflection of the feeling any true American would have in the face of all the assaults on our way of life, and on what made us Great - comes to fore.

Both are true. And embraced.

Inasmuch as we need - like AngrySpud, and myself - to literally "learn to love" our Nation with the same purity and passion that Jesus described in the parable of the Child entering Heaven; we also need to have a bit of old-fashioned, grumpy, Marine (Lead; Follow; or get the Hell outta the Way!!!) attitude.

It's all good, brothers - we will Win. And our children will grow up in a better world for it.
