So, I'm looking for comments and informed opinion on my two original questions:

1. Who would be a good conservative Democrat candidate for President? And,

2. Would Sen. Zell Miller be a good conservative candidate for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States?

YES. He'd pose a credible challenge to President Bush. But unfortunately his political views make him anathema to the hard core Left that runs the Democratic Party.

He is a Conservative...but he's still a Democrat. He still supports the Democrat party very much.

#2 is irrelevant because Zell Miller is 100% done with politics when his Ga Senate term ends.

...the hard core Left that runs the Democratic Party.

He might, however, provide an excellent reason for the rest of the party to get its collective behind to the polls on primary day.

Problem is every Democratic Party member at the Federal hates his guts because he usually sides with the Republicans on passing bills, including tax cuts.

Have you read the public letters he had made about the present state of the Democratic Party, he skewwers his own party.

That I why I voted for him to be in the Senate. That and the fact that he was good as governor of Georgia.

This is a pipe dream. There's no way the hardcore left that is the RAT base would ever vote for Zell. They hate him.

Let him retire and have some peace.

Zell Miller would be an excellent Republican candidate, IMO.

He'd make a wonderful third party candidate. I bet Hill and Bill would be salivating at the thought. But Zig-Zag Zell is too smart for that.

"conservative democrat" [/oxymoron]

While we frequently chided Zell as Governor (zig-zag-Zell)... he posted a good eight years in a difficult political environment; He has been marginally heroic in filling the shoes of the late Paul Coverdell.

I believe he prefers to retire and write...and...
Though I believe he has the makings of a good POTUS,the Democrat party leadership and lefty support base could not abide him... he is anathema to them.

Regards,

"That and the fact that he was good as governor of Georgia."

I can agree with that. The Hope Grant that he got passed really benefitted me, and a lot of other Georgians.

I think a better question is, if the Republicans nominated Arlen Specter or John Chafee or Susan Collins for President and the Democrats named Zell Miller who would the majority of Freepers vote for?

I'd say Miller. Hell, I'd even vote for Miller over Trent Lott.

...does Sen. Zell Miller have any major "negatives"?

He wholeheartedly supported and campaigned for Max Cleland. That's pretty durn negative in my book.

Zell Miller is a Democrat. I don't see him switching parties. Nuff said.

I'd definately give him a look if he were nominated. He wouldn't be nominated by today's Dem Party.
