NEW YORK - Hans Blix, the United Nations inspector who clashed often with the Bush administration over allegations of Iraq's possession of weapons of mass destruction, has a book deal.
Pantheon hopes to publish Blix's book, currently untitled, in the spring of 2004.
"The core of the book will be the four months leading up to the invasion of Iraq," Pantheon editor Dan Frank said Thursday. "It will give readers a clear sense of what the U.N. does and the ins and outs of diplomacy."
Frank said Blix has written about a half to two-thirds of what should be a 250-300 page book. Financial terms were not disclosed, but a source close to the negotiations said that the deal was worth around $500,000, factoring in both domestic and foreign rights.
Blix, who retired last summer, spent three years searching for Iraqi chemical, biological and ballistic missiles as head of the U.N. Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission.
Saddam Hussein's alleged possession of banned weapons was the main justification the United States and Britain used for invading Iraq in March. In the weeks before the war, some U.S. officials strongly criticized Blix's failure to support the Bush administration's contention that Saddam had an active illegal weapons program.
Months of searching in Iraq have produced no announced discoveries that would validate the bulk of the allegations that helped lead to the war. Blix recently accused the United States of showing "questionable honesty" over Iraq and said the country was attacked despite posing no immediate threat.
Oh, can you imagine what a FReep of Blixie would look like!? [g]
....which will get delayed until late summer of 2004 - just in time for the election.
Just damn.
If you want on the new list, FReepmail me. This IS a high-volume PING list...
[As i mentioned, the B/C & JD! lists are going to float into and out of whack over the forseeable future, while I try to cobble a rig back together for myself. My apologies for any incovenience or misunderstandings in this time frame. New signups/removals may be flaky in this time-frame as well; please bear with me, and keep in mind you may have to FReepmail me more than once for me to get it done. Thanks again!]
