As the recall race nears its finish, a major question persists: How bad off is California? Experts separate the rhetoric from reality and assess how the state has fared under Davis when it comes to the four E's: the economy, environment, energy and education.

I stopped reading after they stated that the recession wasn't Davis's fault!
What a bunch of idiots. No Kidding, Davis didn't cause the Country wide recession? I suppose not spending at pre-recession rates would never have occured to these genius writers as something a good leader would do?

A bit biased towards Davis, I'd say.
My complaint about Davis is that when the state slid towards crisis, he didn't lead to staunch the bleeding. Instead, he waited until there was blood all over the carpet and then acted by trying to push the crisis into the future, anything so it wouldn't blow up right now.
This happened in both the power and budget crises, so I'm certain it's a personality characteristic of Davis which, in my view, makes him unsuited for any form of responsible position. Unfortunately, since this kind of stress is rarely put on a man, we don't know whether he's really suited for office until he deals with this kind of blow-up.
At least it happened before he became President. THAT would have been a nightmare!
The state seems in okay shape now, because he's postponed the pain. The only way to evaluate him for real is to fast-forward a few years and see how badly the debt he's piled up and the massive excess power bills have hurt us.
But there are enough signs, such as the debt rating reduction and other problems, to make me feel that Davis must go, now. Thus the recall.

He portrayed himself as a hero for
signing those exorbitant power contracts; now he presents himself as a hero for trying to worm out of them.
Like all politicians he relies on the short memory of the public. Imagine that! A hero twice!

"Since Davis took office at the beginning of 1999, California has added jobs at a significantly faster pace than the nation as a whole... I couldn't make it past this gem. How can CA unemployment be half a point higher than the rest of the nation, the educated and skilled moving out per the census and the state economy be adding jobs? Does that make sense?
Maybe the writer means adding jobs for illegals...

I was in San Francisco over the last couple of days. One headline I observed in the Chronical read, "Gray Davis Challenges Actor to Debate".
Remember the leftist vent on Reagan regarding his being an actor? LOL, if a leftist actor vents against conservatives it's their absolute right, but if a conservative actor runs for office, they are evil incarnate to the leftist rags like the Chronical.

The SF Chronicl is a house organ for the Democratic party. Biased items that should be in the editorial pages routinely run as news on the front pages. Another favorite is to run an opinion piece on the front page as "news anaysis" when in reality it is simply liberal dribble. This paper has no shame.
