As an issue in California, immigration is rather like nitroglycerin -- it's powerful enough to reshape the electoral landscape, but if it isn't handled with great care, it can blow up in your face.

Case in point: two ads that Arnold Schwarzenegger's campaign has begun airing.

For some reason the internet edition has a different headline than the print edition. On the internet it is "Recall: Politics and Race", but the print edition headline specifies that immigration is becoming an issue in campaigns (I left my copy at my son's Little League game, if anyone knows the exact print headline please post.

The media is trying as hard as it can to ignore the groundswell of opinion on this issue, this piece represents a furtive initial acknowledgement of the potency of the issue.

Similarly, the recall effort was at first ignored, then ridiculed, by the likes of The Chronicle. They aren't laughing now, are they?

The left just can't bring themselves to say illegal immigration.

Well, they will soon choke on the word.

No matter how many times the wonkish Wilson stressed that he was all for legal immigration, many Latinos could never forgive what they saw as scapegoating -- particularly his ad depicting shadowy figures crossing the border while a narrator ominously intoned "They keep coming . . ." To them he became "El Cucuy" -- Spanish for bogeyman.

Well, that scapegoat canard was parroted by the Democrats, the L.A. Times, and Republicans such as Jack Kemp, Bill Bennett, and George W. Bush.

In 2004, things will come home to roost for all the Illegal Alien chickens.

Somewhere, someday, voters will have a chance to vote for a decent candidate who campaigns on the immigration issue. Boy, are the media going to be surprised.

I hope illegal immigration becomes THE big domestic issue, as it should. America is sick of having illegal immigration, "diversity" and multiculturism rammed down its throat over and over, and one of the results of force feeding is nausea. Until the politicians of either party start doing what Americans are clamoring for, I think there will be many who will refuse to vote at all, disgusted at the whole mess.

I am urging each one of us to do our part in the coming weeks by taking Roy Beck's suggestion to call our congressfolk in support of Rep. Tancredo's H.R. 946 (Mass Immigration Reduction Act of 2003). If enacted, it would slash legal numbers to around 300,000 and then cause them to steadily fall after that. Toll free numbers into the Capitol are currently available:

1-800-648-3516 or 1-877-762-8762

In addition, if you go to Roy's link, you'll get all the phone numbers of the country's congressfolk:

Let's win this war for once and for all!

Best regards,
Penny

I have two letters in the mail to my Texas US Senators. Doubt they will even read beyond the first line (their helpers that is). Stange when one considers that fully 70% of the American public consider this a major issue while the pols (both parties) are willing to ignor and put the nation at risk out of fear of turning off the "latino" community. Why, by law they can't vote if they aren't legal, oh sorry forgot voting is open to one and all legal and illegal. So much for the "privilage" of voting reserved for American citizens.

Prop. 187 was invalidated in court, but not before it spurred an unprecedented Latino voter registration drive, helped ensure the defeat of every Republican candidate for statewide office since, and created a rift between Latinos and the state GOP that vexes the White House even now.

I am so sick and tired of seeing this lie repeated over and over again in the press. The GOP share of the Latino vote did not change significantly over the last 10 years. And while it is true that the number of Latino voters increased, in percentage terms it was not that great, certainly not big enough to account for the GOP's failings in 1998 and since.

PROPOSITION 187 WAS AND IS A WINNING ISSUE FOR THE CA GOP. Republicans need to ignore all the leftist spin surrounding it.
