Breaking News? Ha!
To: Grig
Any word on which movies this will be playing in front of?
I'm gonna be kind of sad when this finally comes out, it'll mark the end of an era, the closing of a chapter. I'll manage to sublimate the sadness long enough to enjoy the movie though.

I was not interested in this series at all until last year (I read part of The Hobbit as a kid but it just wasn't my style). Then I saw LOTR on DVD at a neighbor's house and I was so hooked that I started reading the books. We went to see TTT last Christmas time and I was the only female in the group that was with us that showed any interest in it. I am so excited about the ROTK because it was my favorite of the three books, but like discostu said, it will be kind of sad because it is the end of a journey. Tolkien had an awesome gift of storytelling! And now I am back to reading the Hobbit and this time it seems a lot cooler than 20 years ago!

You should pick up a copy of Tolkien's 'Silmarillion' which is, in effect, the prequel to the LTR triology. It's harder reading but it's just as exciting as the trilogy plus there's an excellent glossary in it that identifies all the characters and their origins. It provides great insight into the world Tolkien created and explains the divine origins of Gandalf, Sauruman and Sauron, the elves, and more.

I have seen that book at Amazon or somewhere and I always thought that it would be a helpful companion to the series. People have tried to explain some of the different intricacies of the story to me but unless it's in visual form, it kind of goes in one ear and out the other.
Thanks for the recommendation--now I'll have to buy it and read the series again :)

I have the extended DVD of The Fellowship of the Ring with about 30 additional minutes of story which I watch on my computer's 23" high-definition plasma-screen monitor.
It's really something to see and the longer version makes for a more comprehensible story line.
The extended version of The Two Towers comes out October 18.

I have that same extended DVD but haven't watched it yet. My in-laws sent us TTT DVD earlier this month--haven't watched it yet either! I think Thanksgiving weekend we will have a LOTR watching party in our house :) I would love to have the extended version that comes out on the 18th. (The two little ones make it hard to watch TV sometimes).
To: Okies love Dubya 2
WOW! Extended version? You mean the movie theaters cheated us?? I rented the flick, but can't remember if the video I rented had the omitted scenes on it. Can someone set me straight on this? Is the flick coming out on Oct.18 different from the one you rent in the video stores?
To: Okies love Dubya 2
ROTK is a very good book in the trilogy...but do you think they'll keep the story's original ending?

The movie, edited, was over 3 hrs long. They had to cut the scenes or you'd be in a 4 hr movie!
And yes, it would be a different version.

The one you rented was probably the theatre version.
The extended version of the first movie is a 4-disk set, two of which are strictly about the making of the movie.
Yes, the one due 10/18 will be longer with additional scenes.

I don't know if they'll keep the original ending...but what I am looking forward to is the scene with Shelob...just reading about it gave me the willies :P
As for eye candy in the movie--I like my men blond haired and blue eyed--Legolas is da bomb!

I just remembered--Shelob is from TTT and I lumped it into ROTK! Do I feel stupid! It's time to reread those books!

It provides great insight into the world Tolkien created and explains the divine origins of Gandalf, Sauruman and Sauron, the elves, and more. To say nothing of providing a great rebuttal to all those "Tolkien-is-a-raving-sexist" idiots. Melian, Arien, Galadriel in her less peaceful days, Idril, Aredhel, LUTHIEN-for-cryin'-out-loud...

Whoo hoo party party!! XD
btw, should you want some GREAT lotr pics, here's a very good site . It has pics sorted by the book chapters, not the movies. (and remember, every one book of the trilogy is made of two books). VERY cool.

Legolas had 2 of my favorite scenes in The Two Towers. The one where he mounts Arragone's(sp?) horse on the run by grabbing under the horse's neck and swinging up onto it's back. And the other when he stands on a metal shield and rides it down the stairs while rapid firing his arrows at the enemy. What an elf!

Thanks for the pics! I started checking out the site you linked to--I have it saved to my Favorites for later viewing (the little ones are getting restless and need tending to). I am very interested in finding out the background of the trilogy because it would probably make the books more clear to me in some arenas.

Remember the first book? How Legolas was always so moody? I thought he was on drugs or something...
First he's really sad, then he's really happy, then he's really freaked out, then he's sad. Geez boy, get a grip! lol

Wasn't that Gimli's horse he hopped onto? Legolas & Gimli typically rode together. Helluva stunt in any case.

So when
Return of the King comes out, that is it? That is the end? No
Simarillion movie? No
Hobbit movie? Is this the end of Tolkien?
What if some composer was to do an opera version of LOTR? Sort of like the Ring Cycle by Wagner, only on a larger scale.

It could have been Gimli since I was paying more attention to Legolas than the rider. Isn't Gimli the short, stocky troll guy with an axe? If so, then it wasn't him on the horse in that scene. I think it was Aragorn (thanks for the spelling correction, 4mycountry).

Viewed the trailer on a high-speed ethernet connection at work.........
Excellent! I can't wait! I've read the books nearly 15 times over the years.
Jackson, however, excluded a number of entire CHAPTERS from TTT. I have no idea how he's going to complete the entire ROTK, all the way to the end (ie. the 4 Hobbits going back to The Shire, throwing out the Saruman and Wormtongue, and Frodo's 'passing into the West').....AND include the missing materal from the TTT. This should be a 4 or 5 hour movie, shouldn't it?

Remember the scene in Moria where Aragorn wanted to help Gimli across the chasm created by a falling bridge? Gimli didn't want Aragorn to 'toss' him. Cute, but not part of the original text, obviously.

Remember the scene in Moria where Aragorn wanted to help Gimli across the chasm created by a falling bridge? Gimli didn't want Aragorn to 'toss' him. Then in the scene in TTT at the battle of Helm's Deep, Gimli tells Aragorn he can't jump the distance to the causeway, "you'll have to toss me!"

Oh yeah, I remember that scene. But I thought Gimli told Aragorn to toss him across. A funny scene anyway! There's so much to see in these movies that it will take me many viewings to see it all. It's been 30 years since I read the books so my memory is a bit faded now.
I loved the scene when the elfen troops showed up to join the fight. I was celebrating...yes! The elves are in!
