A call for 'United Nations of Religions'

As a two-day conference of major religions ended in Kazakhstan, key leaders of 18 faiths agreed to meet regularly under the banner "Congress of World and Traditional Religions."

One delegate hoped the group would translate into a "United Nations of Religions." Speeches touched on how to address differences between religions, the need for more dialogue, and the issue of terrorism.

The secretary-general of the Muslim World League, Sheikh Abdullah Al-Turki, from Saudi Arabia, said the Koran prohibits any acts of violence.

He told the delegates, "Islam is against all killing that is without a just cause. We cannot accept those who say that Islam is a religion that kills or harms others." Sheikh Al-Turki said Muslims also oppose those who use religion for political purposes.

The senior Jewish representative at the conference was Jonah Metzger, the chief rabbi of Israel. He spoke of the need for greater understanding between faiths, directing his remarks to the delegations from Saudi Arabia, Iran, Pakistan, and Egypt, who were sitting just a short distance away.

Metzger invited all of those present to come to Jerusalem, which he called by its Islamic name of "Al-Quds." He told the conference that the invitation applied to everyone, even those with whom Israel does not have diplomatic relations.

During the conference there were private meetings between delegates from the Catholic and Russian Orthodox churches, which have spiritual differences going back centuries as well as more recent disputes over property in the former Soviet Union.

Hindus from India also had a chance to talk with their historical Muslim adversaries from Pakistan.

Representatives of other faiths at the congress included Taoists and Buddhists from China, and a Shinto delegation from Japan.

The congress was chaired by President Nursultan Nazarbayev, who initiated the idea of holding the meeting in Kazakhstan's new capital city, Astana. The delegations agreed that Kazakhstan would be the appropriate place for a new, permanent organization to allow for more dialogue between peoples of all religions. Nazarbayev offered to provide a new building.

Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
John 8:44

And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men, And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast;...

Ecumenism is good if properly handled. There is much danger, however, when world religions try to hold hands inside the same tent. There are those, waiting for just this "kumbaya" moment to step forward with their One World Religion. They have even forged an insignia - a composite of the symbols from each major religion, and I refuse to post a link to their site.

So now all we need to know is what Islam considers "just cause."

Actually, I don't think it's freedom that's the problem. Their Koran tells them to convert everyone to Islam, and all who will not convert should die. Nice people, aren't they?

You are probably aware that this movement is already up and running. It's all the rage on the West Coast, and if I'm not mistaken, even Bishop Levada of SF has had favorable words for it.

Frankly, it makes my hair stand on end.

He told the delegates, "Islam is against all killing that is without a just cause."

The problem is that "just cause" starts with "looking at me funny" and goes on from there.

For a theory of Islamic justice in action, see the recent case in the UK regarding the Muslim father who killed his 16 year old daughter for dating a Christian.

Hadn't thought of that. Thanx. 9/11 may have fulfilled that prophesy... .One World Religion is about to come to pass.

I'm all for world religious leaders getting together and working for the promotion of peace and other proper endeavors, but any such joint efforts should be conducted wth the firm understanding that any Christian bodies involved are involved for the sake of the betterment of humankind and not as a part of any syncretic program. It should be made crystal clear that the Christian representatives to any "United Faiths" organization hold the Christian faith as the only true faith and that its doctrines and practices are not to be compromised for the sake of unity.

There is no need for a new one-world religion. Christ Himself established a one-world Church two thousand years ago, and that church still stands today. Catholic = Universal.

Islam is such a peaceful loving religion that a Mosque in Birmingham (England) was named for Saddam Hussein until this summer. Though, this would fit in with the loony world-view of the U.N. which thinks that Libya is the best country to head a comission on human rights.

So now all we need to know is what Islam considers "just cause."

Oh that's easy... for the Wahabbis (Al Qaeda), everyone who does not believe in Wahabbi doctrine.

For the Shi'a (Iran), everyone who does not believe in Shi'a doctrine.

For Palestinian Authority, any Jew living in "Palestine."
