Today Show in its Glory: Double-Barreled Bashing of Rush/Arnold; Softball Interview of Davis
The Today Show

Posted on 10/02/2003 4:45:31 AM PDT by governsleastgovernsbest

Katie Couric could barely control her glee. From her liberal perspective, this was a day of double-dose good news, and she wallowed in it.

Today opened with segment on Rush's resignation. Katie conducted a rather lame interview with black former NFL QB Doug Williams, and former GOP Congressman and college QB J.C. Watts.

JC's basic point was that the facts didn't support Rush's allegation that a sympathetic press had exaggerated Donovan McNabb's performance. But he stopped short of calling Rush a racist. Williams was tougher on Rush and did suggest his comments were "racial," but in fairness Williams seems like a good sort and was not trying to exploit the situation.

Katie saved her vitriol on the issue for a later interview with Tim Russert. She quoted at length from uber-liberal Boston Globe columnist Derrick Jackson.

Jackson had written a column when Rush was initially hired by ESPN in which he reproduced a variety of quotes on race by Rush from over the years. Katie read them all, and then in an arch tone asked Russert whether ESPN should have hired Rush in the first place.

Russert didn't play along with Katie's script, simply observing that ESPN knew what they were getting.

Of course Today's first half-hour also highlighted the story from the LA Times in which a number of women claim that Arnold had groped them. The newspaper is claiming they got no help from the Davis camp but Arnold is alleging a Davis smear campaign.

Russert simply observed that Arnold needs women's votes, and has made efforts in that direction such as appearing on Oprah with his wife. He said Arnold will have to address the issue.

Somehow, in the middle of the crowded half-hour, Today managed to shoe-horn in a super-softball interview of Gray Davis by notorious lefty Campbell Brown. A sampling of her sympathetic questions:

"Does it bother you that, with all the experience you have as governor, you might be replaced by someone with no experience?"

Guess what, it doesn't make Gray happy.

"Some Democrats feel that if the Republicans win, it would amount to stealing the governorship, and they would launch a counter-recall [against Arnold]. How do you feel about it?"

Davis didn't express support for the re-recall, but said it was understandable.

All in all, a red letter day in Katie's diary.

Note that Katie's idea of "fair and balanced" on the Rush interview was to have on JC Watts, who called Rush's comments unjustified, and Doug Williams, who called them "racial."

Looks as if I won't be watching NBC anymore.

Oh - wait a minute - I haven't watched that network in YEARS - except for the Olympics!!

I noticed that, too. But, with Rush resigning from ESPN, who was there that would have stood up for him more than JCWatts did? Are there any big names, at this early hour?

This is SUCH a load of crap. There was NOTHING racist at all in his OPINION.

This is setting a very dangerous tone.....so minorities can't be critizied? They want acceptance, but cry racism when someone believes they're less than perfect, is THAT it?

It's BS.

Please, someone, ANYONE show me how what he said was racist.

What would one expect from a network which genuflects to Saddam anyway

Couric, representing NBC:
"We (at NBC) all hope and pray that Saddam escaped harm, and hopefully fled to Syria."

Since she has become such a whore for the DNC, her name should be "Katie Whoric."

Hopefully the devil didn't hear their prayers.

I watched the damn show just to see what-all they planned to broadcast.

You have written an accurate and cohesive account of the disgusting segments I witnessed.

To describe Katie "gleeful," is a gross understatement. The witch could barely contain herself. She is truly a DU troll.

And Russert looked absolutely constipated. Maybe he was.

Good point. I'm sure The Today Show wasn't overwhelmed with conservatives tripping over themselves for the opportunity to come on to defend Rush.

Maybe Michael Savage would have been available! ;-)

Not quite sure why JC bothered, since he neither defended Rush nor squarely criticized him. He wound up looking mealy-mouthed. And someone should tell JC to lose that squirrely-looking mustache he was sporting.

THANK YOU! I kept thinking something was different about Watts, but couldn't pin point it. The mustache looks ridiculous, makes him look much, much younger. Maybe that is why he likes it? (Or maybe Mrs. Watts likes it.)

Once again Rush is right. Sports is a part of the culture, and the culture wars are being fought at The New York Times, LA Times, Philadelphia Enquirer, SF Chronicle, Washington Post, and other liberal fishwrap. One can no more imagine that a conservative sports commentator would be acceptable at those news organizations than to think that one could hold an honest debate on blacks in sports. Though sports TV is peopled by airheads, the presence of a conservative voice is a rare event.

I regret that Rush has resigned, but in a larger sense he has made a strong point. Folks, there is a war going on out there. A war for the hearts and minds of the American people -- and sports is not excluded from that mix. Political correctness is not only soul-destroying, it is nation-destroying as well.

I should have reported that at the end of her interview with Russert, Katie gleefully mentioned "well, I'm sure we'll be hearing more about these stories in coming days!"
