COMMERCIALS CAN'T HIDE LEWIS' PAST

Tuesday, September 30, 2003 - 12:00 AM
The Daily Herald

Ray Lewis came on the television screen Sunday in one of those commercials that's run during an NFL game.

Lewis looked like some sort of a glorified pledge trainer, and the young men clad in football uniforms around him looked groggy from excessive hazing. He was standing amid a huddle of football players, chanting loudly. Lewis would shout, "What time is it?!" and the pledges would answer, in unison, "Game Time!!"

In a similar spot, Lewis, a perennial all-pro linebacker for the Baltimore Ravens, tells a locker room full of jittery young men that "This is not a playground" and "This is my business."

It's not that these ads for NFL High-Performance Apparel are anything unusual or offensive. They hardly compel you to keep your eyes fixed on the screen rather than dash to the kitchen or the restroom or wherever you choose to pass the time. It's Lewis' presence here that's a little odd.

It was Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, in Atlanta, hours after the city hosted an otherwise-successful Super Bowl, when Lewis' life became unusual. At 10:22 a.m. that morning, a detective from Atlanta's homicide unit interviewed Lewis in suburban Norcross, Ga., about the murders of Richard Lollar, 24, and Jacinth Baker, 21. The two had died from stab wounds inflicted in a melee about 100 steps away at the Cobalt Lounge, a popular nightclub in Atlanta's Buckhead district.

A limousine carrying Lewis and several others was spotted fleeing the scene. Its driver, Duane Fasset, was later found and placed Lewis at the scene. Bullets riddled the limo. Blood stained its interior.

Lewis evaded the detective's questions. He promised to cooperate with the murder investigation only after returning from Hawaii a week later. Lewis had a Pro Bowl to play in. Atlanta police arrested Lewis hours later. They charged him, and two men named Reginald Oakley and Joseph Sweeting, with murder. Reports say Lewis sobbed as police took him away.

On June 5, Lewis struck a plea bargain with prosecutors. He agreed to testify against Oakley and Sweeting and plead guilty to a count of obstruction of justice in exchange his murder and aggravated assault charges be dropped. During the trial, several witnesses changed on the stand the accounts they first told investigators. Oakley and Sweeting were acquitted.

Lewis has since remained out of trouble. He's become active in charities and done what he could to repair his image. The families of Lollar and Baker have had to go on with their lives. Lollar, at the time of his death, was engaged to a woman who was eight months pregnant with their child. The girl was born March 3, 2001, and was named India. Baker was an aspiring artist. Lollar hoped to one day open a hair salon.

It's unclear how much guilt Lewis carries today, but at the very least, he corralled several participants after the brawl into his "truck," as he called it, and sped off. Meanwhile Baker and Lollar lie in the street, bleeding to death. Some reports said the knives used to kill these men were equipped with a T-shaped handle, which allow the blade to slide through fingers. So in the late-night darkness, what looked like a punch was actually a stab from a blade they couldn't see. Then the knives were pulled down, like the handle on a slot machine.

The murders remain, last we checked, unsolved. If you doubt Ray Lewis knows who did it, you're living in denial.

Maybe, just maybe, as these mindless advertisements fill our television screen on Sundays and promote brain lethargy and stupid stereotypes, this is something to think about it. Maybe we should never forget.

Black conservative ping

If you want on (or off) of my black conservative ping list, please let me know via FREEPmail. (And no, you don't have to be black to be on the list!)

Extra warning: this is a high-volume ping list.

[As i mentioned, the B/C & JD! lists are going to float into and out of whack over the forseeable future, while I try to cobble a rig back together for myself. My apologies for any incovenience or misunderstandings in this time frame. New signups/removals may be flaky in this time-frame as well; please bear with me, and keep in mind you may have to FReepmail me more than once for me to get it done. Thanks again!]

I guess I've been around here for about 6 years or so now. Time sure flies!

When Jim Robinson started this site, it was because he was fed up with the liberal media, and how they would not let people worldwide know about the corruption of the Clinton Administration. A few of us, equally concerned, (with great luck) found it fast.

In the early days, FR was a day-to-day operation, always on the brink of bankruptcy. Jim kept on, and we chipped in when it became too much. We knew how important this site was, and is. Sometimes, it came down to the wire, and we wrote checks, and sent them in, as best we could.

Look at it now. We all get our best information from this site. It is huge, with thousands of posters, and millions of readers. Yet Jim still keeps it alive because of his conviction, and he is absolutely NOT making a profit on it. He just believes. As do we.

BTW, did you know that the founder of this site is in a wheelchair (sorry Jim; I know you think it doesn't make a r*ts a$$ difference. Hey, some folks out there need to come down a peg, like I have.).

Think of it! In the darkest days of the Clinton Administration, there was a lone internet site where people with integrity, brains, and sheer gumption could discuss the dangers faced by the US. Not on CNN, for sure.

Earthmovers like Drudge, Ann Coulter, Rush, WFBuckley, his brother, Savage, Buchanan, both houses of Congress (many) check in to see what we think.

The opposition checks it out, too. Like the NY times staff, CNN, AFL-CIO, China, etc. Trust me, they all come here to read. Even YOUR post. You know by now how they are whining about Rush? We're next, as soon as they figure out how they can trash this site without it getting a million hits.

I've been broke; I've been not broke. I've slept in my car. I know how it feels to be squeezed tight with bills. Folks with giant bills: You're not alone, and you have friends here. :)

If you love this site as much as I do, please, please sign up for automatic payment of just $3 per month. Don't be embarrassed if you think this is too little. It absolutely is not. You $3 a month folks are our grassroots movement heroes. Be proud. Become one of the thousand points of light here, and you will so feel proud every month. We'll thank you for it, and are so glad to have you on board.

I know things are rough out there. But you are tough, and a member of the greatest grassroots freedom movement in 100 years. Together we are making history, and will change the world, as we already have. The best is yet to come.

Most countries out there would consider this website illegal. They hate us, for our freedom. Their systems cannot stand, in the face of Freedom. The people there read us when they can, when they are “allowed” to, and are not being tortured. They flock to us, America, because they want to be free. Help us help them.

Would you please, please consider signing up for just $3 a month? Please? That’s all it takes, really, believe it or not. You will make a world of difference, to, well, the world. Be proud, Americans, and please help out!

What is the story behind the Captain part?

I'm a licensed charter boat captain.
I take people fishing for sharks-cod-bass-bluefish and occasionally tuna.

Freepers are everywhere, and in all walks of life, and out on the ocean.-Tom

Are you thinking of Rae Caruth?

He was convicted of hiring some guys to run over his pregnant girlfriend; didn't want to pay child support was the motive, I think.

While Googling for info to reply I found this recent article mentioning him, just posted it here:
