Pizza with snails (/sarc)

I heard a few times over the past 2 years the Library of Congress was being hacked. Someone(s) was trying to rewrite historic docs. Really makes one wonder...

Something's missing

Actually, that would be the politics.

But hey, who wants politics with their pizza? This is a *break* from the bad news of the world.

Calpernia, thanks for putting up the pics of your grandmas...standing in the street with the mountain in the background...a beautiful portrait.

Then we just ADD to the thread.

The History of Pizza

As far back as the year 1000 (take that French!), the Roman soldiers tasted PICEA and thought it lacked FOCUS (the Latin word for hearth). On a hearth, along with oil, herbs and cheese ... pizza was born.

The root word in Latin is PICEA, which describes the blackening of the crust caused by the fire underneath.

The modern pizza occurred in pre-Renaissance Naples. Poor housewives had only flour, olive oil, lard, cheese and herbs with which to feed their families, so combining them in a tasty and delicious manner became the goal. All of Italy proclaimed the Neapolitan pies to be the best.

The most famous experiment of all was by a pizza maker named Raffaele Esposito, who received a royal summons to prepare a special pizza for Queen Margherita. You don't want to disappoint a Queen, you know what I'm saying? He decided to salute the colors of the Italian flag by adding white mozzarella to red tomato and green basil. It became so popular that it's still sold today. If you're a good and popular Queen like Margherita was, you can probably even get it free.

The United States is among the most pizza enthusiastic countries one can find today. How did this come about?

Italian immigrants to New York City began making a version of pizza when they arrived in their new American home at the turn of the 20th century. The first pizzeria in the U.S. was opened by an Italian immigrant in 1905.

In addition, American GI's returning from Italy gained a familiarity with the dish and it is in the post-WWII period that pizza really takes off in the United States.

I have not yet; but my family does. Matter of fact, my parents are there right now. They landed a day before the blackout. I also noticed in the news that the anti globalization protestors were rioting in Rome.

My sister and I have not heard from them. I'm sure they are fine.

Good afternnon lovely sistahs and finest friends. Prayers that the California election rids our poor left coast friends of Davis. I had my doubts about Arnold but LOVE the way he has handled himself with all these last minute assaults.

Free...need to run and work on tomorrow. Will try to stop back later!

Actually, that would be the politics.

No, that's not it. Maybe it's just your unique style that throws me off, but I still contend that there is something wrong. :-)

In getting with the spirit of the thread, here's a delicious Chef Boyardee Pizza.

Yum! It sure puts those New York pizzas to shame.

Fun Tidbit!

The Tarantella Dance originated as a manic response of sharecroppers to the bite of the tarantula. Those bitten suffered severe pain, muscle spasms, vomiting and delirium; some even died. No drugs were available to counteract the venom. Sweating created from the Tarantella dance was thought to flush the venom from the body. Indeed, they would continue for hours and even days. So common was the dancing that musicians patrolled the fields in expectation of being hired to play for the afflicted.

This cure remained widespread for over 300 years and is even said to survive today in remote rural areas of Mediterranean countries. At the height of its popularity it was witnessed by many well known observers including the British diarist, Samuel Pepys, and the British playwright, Oliver Goldsmith. In an act that hardly reflects to his credit, Goldsmith forced one of his servants to be bitten by a tarantula in order to study the effects. Fortunately for the butler, he only suffered minor swelling around the wound.

We agreed over at the NY board that there is plenty of BAD pizza in the NYC area. Maybe 5-6 got rave reviews out of probably 20,000 pizza joints.

I heard Firebrand had a real good crust recipe?

It's interesting/makes sense that most of the good ones are in the non-Manhattan borough. 74th and 5th isn't inconvenient if you're a tourist in Manhattan -- I may try Gino's.

Don't sell yourself short, dutchess. You have never been "too mistake free." LOL!

For example in your thread last week I pointed out an error in your title, but somehow missed a second one. I'm still dismayed about that. :-)
