She must have been terrified. I’m glad they let her go. This could have turned sour, quickly.

Crime is so out of control.

Not exactly - most of the housing is not actual mansions (except the Kennedy compound), just nice Sixties-type houses on good big lots, whose trees have had plenty of time to grow. So the wealth is there, but not liquid. The residents are upper-middle.

Bold, daylight crime. Yikes!

Obviously President Bush's economic policies are forcing good people into lives of crime.

N.H. Senator's Wife Abducted, Released
Updated: Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2003 - 1:38 PM

McLEAN, Va. (AP) - The wife of Sen. Judd Gregg, R-N.H., was abducted at knife-point from her home on Tuesday morning, but later released unharmed, said suburban Virginia police and spokesmen for the senator.

Police said the woman arrived at her house about 9:30 a.m. EDT to find two men waiting inside. One drew a weapon and demanded cash, said Jacqi Smith, a spokeswoman for the Fairfax County Police Department.

One of the men then drove her to a nearby bank while the other followed in another car. After the men received cash from a teller, they fled the scene in their car and the woman called police, Smith said.

Police would not identify the woman. But Gregg's spokesman, Jeff Turcotte, said it was Gregg's wife, Kathleen. Police are on the lookout for a silver Buick LeSabre with the Virginia tag ADB-9712.

Isn't McLean, VA one of the wealthiest, most exclusive suburbs in the country?

Its right next to the upscale shopping district of the DC area - the equivalent of what most cities call their "Galleria" or other high-dollar shopping complex. You get alot of mixture there. It caters heavily to the rich people who live nearby but also has its share of vagrants, thugs, robbers, and mohammedans just like any area around a mall.

Police said Kathy Gregg was abducted outside the Mclean, Va., store.

Would this be the 7-11 store on Old Dominion Rd in downtown McLean??? Small world, if it is.

McLean isn't DC, it's a tony section of NoVA. The CIA is in McLean. McClean is just across the Chain Bridge from a tony section of DC.

Something like that. It's got its fair share of politicians and diplomats. But I think most people are just middle-class/upper middle-class white collar types. Affluent or not, it's got it's fair share of crime. I had my car window broken and a few things inside the car stolen once. Lesson learned: Don't park the car out by the street.

It's not a gated community (although it has some). Yes, a lot of people living around there have money.

Hey, isn't NH where all the libertarians are moving?

I think this is a libertarian plot. They are going to kidnap politician's loved ones and force them to repeal all laws. Including, no doubt, laws about kidnapping.

Close. But not the Libertarians. And not just in NH.

Or maybe the one by the Tysons Corner Holiday Inn.

You're half-right. Salt and pepper.

Lucky the Gregg daughters and son weren't involved.

Senator’s Wife Abducted From Home Police: Forced to Withdraw Money Before Safely Released

Oct. 7— Kathleen Gregg, wife of U.S. Sen. Judd Gregg, R-N.H., was abducted by two men from her home in McLean, Va., today and forced to withdraw money from a bank, police said. She was unharmed and returned home.

Suburban Virginia police said Mrs. Gregg had been out, but returned to her house about 9:30 a.m. ET only to find two men, one black, one white, waiting inside. One of the men drew a knife and demanded cash. Mrs. Gregg apparently told the men she had no money in the house.

The men then drove Mrs. Gregg to a local Wachovia Bank branch, police said, and the black suspect accompanied her inside. Mrs. Gregg asked to withdraw an undisclosed amount of money, and the man grabbed the cash from the teller as she was counting it.

The suspect then ran outside and got into the vehicle driven by the white suspect. The car is described as a silver Chevrolet Monte Carlo with Virginia license plates.

Mrs. Gregg called police from inside the bank.

Fairfax County police spokesman Sgt. Jeffrey Gossett said the suspects were last seen going north on Route 123 toward Washington, D.C. There was no indication the suspects knew who Mrs. Gregg was, Gossett said.

"Obviously they were after cash, as it appears so far, and she complied with their instructions and fortunately, very fortunately, she's unharmed," Gossett said.

Sen. Gregg's office released a statement saying the investigation was ongoing.

"Her life was threatened and it was a terrifying experience. Thanks to quick decisions made by Kathy Gregg, she is doing fine and out of harm's way," reads the statement.

A similarly brazen crime happened in the exclusive McLean neighborhood last week. In that incident, a woman was putting her two children into a car outside a 7-11 convenience store when the family was abducted by one male at gunpoint and forced to withdraw money from an area bank, police said.

President Bush appointed Mrs. Gregg, 52, in 2001 to the board of directors of the Student Loan Marketing Association. She has also served on the New Hampshire Task Force on Child Neglect and Abuse.

Sen. Gregg has served in the U.S. Senate since 1993. Previously, he was New Hampshire's governor for two terms and served four terms in Congress.

Senator and Mrs. Gregg were guests of President Bush at a State Dinner at the White House on Monday night.

They have two daughters, Molly and Sarah, and a son, Joshua. The Greggs are residents of Rye, N.H.

There's one by the Holiday Inn? Don't think I've ever seen it. I remember there being one next to Tower Records.

Wow, this is getting scarier and scarier. That sounds like it could be the Wachovia on Leesburg Pike near McDonalds.

It's been a few years since I was out that way. A combo 7-11 [or similar stop-and-rob] and gas station, as I recall.

The MacDonalds sounds right. There's a ton of fastfood places around there. We used to kid about the yuppies eating at the trendy Scottish restaurant.

They've actually built a hotel (I think it's a Courtyard, but I'm not sure) right beside the Holiday Inn. I would imagine the Holiday Inn managers aren't too pleased about it. The Courtyard faces the main road and pretty much blocks the view of the Holiday Inn, lol. Anyways, that might be where the 7-11 was before. Either that, or I'm not paying enough attention and managed to miss it :).
