Finding little support in the courts, some Ohio lawmakers want to make a statement about the link between the Ten Commandments and America's system of government.

Rep. Mike Gilb, R-Findlay, has sponsored a resolution recognizing the Ten Commandments as "the moral underpinning of state government" and urges all lawmakers to "craft each law with the intent of upholding the Ten Commandments." He said the issue is about history, not religion.

But Saul Cornell, a history professor at the Ohio State University, said calling the Ten Commandments a foundation for constitutional law is "a distortion and simplification of what is a very complicated situation." Cornell said the founding fathers were very religious, but they also worked hard to keep religion away from government.

"The men who wrote the U.S. Constitution and most of these state constitutions were so afraid of getting government involved in religion that they would be horrified with these people doing this kind of stuff," he said. "The moment you let government officially endorse religion, it's going to corrupt it."

The moment you let a professor endorse nonsense, he/she is indoctrinating vs. educating.

Ten Commandments as "the moral underpinning of state government"

Well, I've examined my "state government" and if the Ten Commandments are its "moral underpinning" they should be sued for "nonsupport".

Worth repeating - Government Corrupts Religion. Not vice-versa.

Rev 2:9
"I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan."

1. Thou shalt have no gods before the Lord: Not a law in the US
2. Thou shalt have no idols before the Lord: Not a law in the US
3. Thou shall not misuse God’s name: Not a law in the US
4. Thou shall keep the Sabbath holy: Not a law in the US
5. Thou shall honor thy parents: Not really a law after age 18, and there are a lot of exceptions.
6. Thou shalt not murder: It’s a law, but it’s sort of a given. Every culture says pretty much this same thing.
7. Thou shalt not commit adultery: Not a law, but if it’s proven in divorce proceedings a lot of your stuff goes away. But any culture that values bonds between two people frowns upon breaking that bond.
8. Thou shalt not steal: Once again, most cultures say pretty much this same thing.
9. Thou shalt not give false testimony (don’t lie): Anybody who wants to know the truth values this. Many cultures, therefore, frown on false testimony, and one may be legally punished for perjury and subject to civil penalties privately.
10. Thou shalt not want what others have: Not a law, freedom of thought.

The Ten Commandments Why they are a threat to YOU & the Left

Over the course of the last few decades, the socialist left has made great advances in eliminating one of the foundational documents of American law. That document is the Ten Commandments. Each commandment, dictated by God and recorded in both Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5, presents a unique and serious threat to the leftist agenda.

1) "I AM the LORD Your God Who brought you out of bondage… You shall have no other gods before Me"

The concept that God frees us from bondage is an affront to proponents of big government programs. The Hebrews were not freed by a government program, set of human laws, or United Nations peacekeeping force. It was by the hand of Almighty God that the Hebrews walked out of slavery. Today, the LORD through the His Church liberates thousands and thousands of people from their bondage to perils such as alcoholism, pornography, racism, hunger, poverty, hopelessness, habitual sins, etc. Government programs attempt to do the same, but with less success. Therefore, in order to be the first place people go to have their problems solved, the government needs to regulate and eventually eliminate more successful ecclesiastical programs.

2) "You shall not bow down to false idols"

False idols are often creations of men. In another era, they were statues that represented forces of nature or mythical beasts. Today they are non-tangible things such as money, equality, government policy and diversity. Such non-tangible things are of keen interest to socialist governments and are therefore forced upon the population. The Second Commandment tells the faithful not to worship these creations of men, but to worship the LORD.

3) "You shall not misuse the Name of the LORD Your God"

Having a wrong use of the LORD’s Name indicates that there is a right use for it. People often use His name to justify their actions. Doing something sinful "in the name of God" is detestable to Him, yet doing something righteous in His name is pleasing to Him. He defines what actions are righteous and what are sinful. This conflicts with the socialist concept that the government defines what is right and wrong. "In the Name of God" the Church opposes abortion. "In the Name of ‘a woman’s right to choose’" (which the left concocted), the government protects and even promotes abortion. This is a conflict that must be removed from the hearts and minds of the populace.

4) "Remember the Sabbath Day and keep it holy"

The Fourth Commandment reminds us that our lives are to revolve around God. He is our first priority. All other institutions, interests, and desires are to come after Him. A big spending socialist government seeks to permeate the lives of the people in every way possible. Removing God from the lives of people creates a void in which can be filled regulations, taxes, and socialist ideology.

Theologians observe that the first four of the Ten Commandments concern the relationship between God and humans. Not only do they affirm the primacy of God, they also affirm Him as the sole guardian and protector of freedom. The leftist agenda, however, is to replace God with the government. The Bolshevik motto "God is the state; the state is God" says it all. The first four of the Ten Commandments refute the leftist claim to the ultimate primacy of government. It is for this reason that liberal governments take action to remove the Ten Commandments from the eyes and ears of the population.

By God’s ordinance, the proper place to raise and educate children is the immediate family: father, mother, and children. This system is not only reflected in just about every other major world religion, it also is evident throughout much of nature as well. If, however, a leftist government is to achieve its goal of becoming the sole provider of everything the people need, it must begin with each person as early as possible. If parents are allowed to provide for their children, then children will naturally look to their families for support; not the government. Furthermore, the government can’t control what the parents teach their children. Some parents may raise their children to be staunch environmentalists; others may raise them to be ardent supporters of gun ownership. The government does get some say through compulsory state education, but many children defer to their parents when what they learn in school contradicts what’s taught at home. The institution of the family is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, obstacle to the left’s drive to institute complete government control of every facet of society.

5) "Honor your father and mother" 7) "Do not commit adultery"

These two Commandments are the basic rules the allow families to function properly. Without these parameters, the institution of the family will fall apart. The Fifth governs how children are to relate to their parents. The Seventh governs how husbands and wives relate to each other. Rebellious children and unfaithful parents undermine the family more than debt, unemployment, sickness, tragedy, or any other problem. When a family falls apart, the government is able to step in a take over the raising of the children. To that end, the left promotes policies that directly and indirectly undermine the family. Such policies include passing no fault divorce laws, encouraging parents to put their kids in day care, weakening the meaning of marriage, and teaching children to question and even report their parents’ actions and decisions that are not consistent with government policy.

6) "Do not commit murder"

It is unfortunate that the most basic law of human civilization should be deemed a threat to leftist government. To commit murder is to take someone’s life for purely selfish motives. Execution of criminals and using deadly force in the defense of one’s self, someone else, or one’s country are not murder. But this Commandment condemns abortion and euthanasia. Under the socialized system, the government pays for all health care. If it is known that a fetus will have serious and expensive health problems, then the government can insist on an abortion "so that such resources may be better spent". The same is true of euthanasia. "Wrongful Birth" lawsuits have already found success in French courts; it’s only a matter of time before they come here.

8) "Do not steal"

The concept of stealing is to take something that belongs to someone else. In another words: private property. Pure Communism holds that there is no private property. The people own everything. Socialism (which is the practical imposition of Communism) holds that important items are owned by the people as a whole (such as land and key industries). To socialists, private property is anathema. Contemporary socialism seeks to take control of the property of law abiding citizens through acquisition or endless regulation. The other problem with this Commandment is that it forbids the taking of the fruits of a hard working man’s labor and giving it to a lazy man. In another words, the Seventh Commandment can be used against the socialist concept of the redistribution of wealth.

9) "Do not lie"

Many of our nation’s political elite view themselves as just that: elite. To them, the common man is not smart enough to handle the truth. He must be assured with false promises (such as "let us raise taxes and we’ll fix the schools") in order to get him to go along with their leftist agenda. When the Clinton Administration tried to nationalize health care, it did not tell the nation all the details. Only when conservatives studied the proposal (hundreds and hundreds of pages) did they tell the nation about the details (such as it would be illegal for someone to get treatment from a doctor other than the one assigned to them by the government). If the left had been completely honest with the public, very few, if any, of their policies would have become law. To the left, dishonesty is just a means to an end.

10) "Do not covet"

To covet is to go out of one’s way to obtain or exceed something someone else has. This can be by improving one’s self (such as becoming a workaholic to make more money) or by bringing down the other person (such as destroying his property). Coveting is not just a simple desire to have nice things, nor is it inherent in the spirit of healthy competition. It does occur when one arranges his life in an irrational manner around the fact that someone might have something nicer than he (such as a house, job or family). This mindset often leads to bitterness, spite and anger. True liberals (not just social do-gooders) are incredibly bitter and spiteful. They cringe at the concept of someone else being happy when they are not. It is this mindset that is most dangerous to America. The bitter left has assaulted almost every activity and belief Americans have held near and dear. It’s not just the little things such as fireworks on the 4th of July, Nativity scenes or backyard barbeques (which cause cancer and hurt the ozone), the assault is on bedrock principals such as the Church, the family, liberty, responsibility (which is being replaced with entitlement), private property, etc. It’s not just that one can be fired for saying "Merry Christmas" at work, it’s that 1st graders are being suspended from school for quietly saying a prayer before a meal. This all derives from the bitter left’s coveting of other people’s happiness. Because they are not happy and because they are uncomfortable with themselves and their beliefs, nobody can be happy and nobody can act on their beliefs.

For these reasons, the left must do everything possible to remove the Ten Commandments from society. From bulletin boards to court houses, the war against the Laws of God is being fought by those who desire to replace them with the laws of man. While the actual fight may be over nothing more than a poster board or plaque, the consequences of the battle are far reaching.

" a latter-day Politburo (( SAINTS - gods too ))" !

e-as ...

No. The ACLU says the First Amendment protects their right (( atheism )) to free speech, which the Second does not protect your right to keep and bear arms.

I was going to say they don't understand the concept that the militia is made up of the very people referenced in the text of the amendment. But they do get this, and very well. They simply know that when the people are completely disarmed, there is no impediment to the ... ACLU becoming --- a latter-day Politburo.

I'm telling you, gather weapons and ammo now while you still can.

An odd little rant- I know of a case locally in which the ACLU was representing a local landlord who was publically posting Biblical messages on his private property, contrary to the wishes of a local zoning authority. They tend to get involved when government gets involved promoting religion. Last time I checked, atheism was legal and more states were permitting concealed carry for firearms. Decaf costs a bit more, but I suggest you make the switch.
