McClintock Cautiously Optimistic About Chances

After casting his vote this morning in a Thousand Oaks polling place, Republican state Senator Tom McClintock expressed confidence that an upset win would put him in the governor's office.

In recent days, McClintock has repeatedly said his his third place standing in the polls doesn't respresent the true feelings of voters. He believes the people of California will vote their consciences, resulting in a victory for him.

McClintock had a message for those who like his message, but say he can't win and intend to vote for Schwarzenegger instead of him. "Don't vote for someone else's calculations, vote your own convictions," he said.

While disturbed by recent allegations about fellow Republican Schwarzenegger, McClintock also expressed skepticism about the charges because of the timing. Whatever his reservations, however, he said that if the accusations are proven, Schwarzenegger doesn't deserve to be governor.

McClintock has mapped out his first day in office if elected. First, he plans to sign an executive order to repeal the car tax, then take action to rescind expensive energy contracts, and finally call a special session to examine workman's compensation issues.

Not at all. But on what issues can you say Arnold is the more conservative candidate?

You sound as delusional as Tom. If you cannot attract over half the votes, you have absolutely NO effect on what happens in the legislature. Unfortunately, far to many conservatives would rather lose than have a chance to influence legislation.

Tom didn't lay a finger on Arnold during the debate and said we should be skeptical of last minute charges.

What did you want him to say? That if the charges were true, they'd be no big deal?

Tom was nothing more than a pro forma candidate in the last two weeks of the campaign.

You all of these references to "damn the principles" are really presumptious.

The flaw in your argument is that someone who votes for Arnold is going against YOUR principles, not theirs. Obviously, conservatives who support Arnold see it as a principled act to vote for the candidate who will actually stand a chance to win the election so that he will be in a position to push liberalism back, if only a little.

By voting Arnold, those people are standing by THEIR principles, and frankly, YOUR principles are and should be meaningless to them.

The charges that the LA Times made were over 10 years old. For Tom to even dignify such a blatant attempt to discredit Arnold at the behest of the Davis campaign was not a wise decision, in my book.

I don't automatically assign the term RINO to anyone voting for Arnold. Some of the FReepers I respect most decided that the pragmatic thing to do was to vote for him. I understand their reasoning 100%. My only beef is with the people that actually prefer Arnold on the issues over Tom. They're in the vast monority here on FR, but the number of them is alarming nonetheless.

They don't have to explain to you why they did it.

And it doesn't make them wrong just because they don't agree with you.

Even McClintock said people should vote their consciences; they apparently did.

Politics is not for wussies, the rational folk have been telling the Tombots that he couldn't win since day one, and they instead decided to hide in their cognative dissonance.

If Arnold hadn't run, Tom would still get 13%, behind Issa or Simon or Riordan, that is the reality of the situation, and you can only do so much to try to shine reality on some people.

I don't know what YOUR true agenda is. It cannot be influencing legislation. It cannot be turning back the abuses of the Demoncratic party in California.

If you are set on losing (which you obviously are), you cannot influence legislation. Without your "RINO", Bustagut would be deciding (along with your Demoncrat house and senate) how to screw you. At least with your RINO, you have a chance to talk to him, reason with him, and convince him your way is right. You way, you are totally shut out of the process. Sounds pretty stupid to me.
