Stephen Dewey resides in Boston, Massachusetts, where he has lived for his entire life. He is currently a student at Boston Latin School, a public magnet school, and will finally graduate, after six years, in June of 2003.
Stephen recently served as a volunteer intern for Speaker Thomas Finneran of the Massachusetts House of Representatives. He got the job by calling the Speaker's office and asking if they had any extra work he could do; after he began working there, he realized that state representatives always have too much work! Stephen's biggest accomplishment was the creation of a database of news articles pertaining to the Speaker's legislative efforts. Stephen also did significant work for the Speaker's constituent services department. He is quite proud of his relationship with the Speaker, who remains one of the only pro-life and pro-fiscal-responsibility congressmen in the state.
This summer, Stephen will be serving as a paid intern in the office of Massachusetts Secretary of State William Galvin. He got the job through the John William Ward Foundation, which provides internships as part of a memorial to John Ward, who is famous for his efforts to expose and eliminate corruption in the Massachusetts Senate in the early 1980s. In addition to helping the Secretary with his duties, Stephen will meet with other sponsors of the fellowship, including the Governor and the Mayor of Boston, for group meetings to discuss state and local politics.
Stephen attends the Cambridge Vineyard church, where he is a member of the youth group and recently joined the sound team. Outside of church, Stephen is involved in FOCUS, a nationwide Christian ministry for high school students. Stephen also likes to read My Utmost For His Highest, by Oswald Chambers, as well as books by C.S. Lewis.
Within his school, Stephen serves as the Media Coordinator for the Young Republicans' Club (http://www.geocities.com/blsrepublicans). Through the YRC, Stephen attended the Massachusetts state GOP convention as a volunteer. This past January, President Bush attended Boston Latin to tout his education reform bill, in a ceremony which Stephen was fortunate enough to attend, having received a ticket from the YRC. Stephen recently finished his second year as captain of his school's debate team, as well as his second year as a staff writer for the school newspaper.
Stephen likes to read, and accordingly subscribes to a number of the Internet's finest newsletters. Among them he counts the NF-RA newsletter (National Federation of Republican Assemblies), the Federalist, the GOPUSA Eagle, and the Massachusetts Family Institute newsletter. Stephen is a paying member of the Massachusetts Citizens for Life, and a paying associate member of the AMRC.
As a relatively young Republican, Stephen likes to consider himself among the next wave of conservative politicians and political activists. His hope is that his generation of conservatives will be at least as intelligently minded as those of years past, with the hope of providing America with a brighter future. Although some would call him a fish out of water in the liberal city of Boston, Stephen feels that his area has better things coming, and will do his best to aid their development.
