Tolerance builds up over time. Seem to recall that Matthew Perry had a similar problem/experience/rehab.

Heres one of them with an edited prayer for him:

Fatima (1000+ posts) Fri Oct-10-03 03:08 PM Response to Original message

33. And the whole time, insulting other drug addicts left and right on his cruel show...and he has the gall to ask for "prayers."

Here's my prayer: that he lose his f**king job, like the miserable trash that he is...that he endure the same misery he wished on others...that he sink into obscurity and become a household joke...that we never see or hear from this hateful, nasty man again.

That's my prayer.

Nice prayer DUmmy, may the same fate come upon you and yours TEN-Fold!!

You are the only one that can let you down!

It's a glorious day ~ Rush has admitted addiction and is committed to rehab where he'll get involved in a program like AA ~ it's a lifesaver ~ I know, I've been clean and sober since October 26, 1930.

One Day At A Time!

You can't BE a junkie if you can't get the drugs, and I doubt very highly he'll have access to such drugs in the future. What do I know, but more power to him. It can happen to the best of us, and Rush is proof of this.

Pain can drive people crazy and they will do desperate things.

He probably was also driven by a desire to continue playing golf despite the pain.

May God help him overcome this addiction.

He needs and deserves all our prayers.

Damn.

I knew there was something to the story.

My Dad, who was a doctor himself, was in a horrible car accident before I was even born, he couldn't even walk for a couple of years. Although I was never told directly, I have assumed that he got addicted to pain killers for a couple of years afterwards just by some things that were said later. He lived in constant pain for over 40 years, I just don't know how. He ended up taking large amounts of arthritis type drugs later in life which was not good either. Chronic pain is something I wish on nobody.

I just want to know how Rush played golf with all these back problems.

I never assume perfection. But drug abuse is a bit more than an imperfection. Especially if criminal conduct is involved.

Hannity: "My definition of friendship doesn't begin in the good times. It's easy to be friends with someone when they're helping out and you're getting something from somebody...those of you that may be quick to judge, what has he given you over the course of 15 years, what has he provided you over the course of 15 years...I feel very confident based on all that he's going through and the very courageous stand he took today he is dealing with an issue that has come up in his life...and I believe his true friends and supporters will be there for him. This does not diminish all the great things he has done for conservativism, Republicans, and the radio industry... If you are truly a compassionate liberal you will not take such glee... If you've been through the same kind of operation and experienced the same kind of pain... This is a good man. This guy has done tremendous work and has been a force for good in this country...and radio...and a good close personal friend. And we look forward to him being back behind the microphone...our thoughts and our prayers are with him. And our friendship is with him in his tougher hours. Rush, we love you, Godspeed, we wish you back soon, you have been a role model in spite of what you said today about yourself...we'll be praying for you." (Sounds slightly choked up.)

And the WAR ON DRUGS claims another victim.

Do you really want it to be legal to sell the drugs Rush was taking without controls?

prescription drugs ARE used as recreational drugs by some people. you do get a high or buzz from some...they're no different than "illegal" drugs.
drug abuse, or alcohol abuse, or prescription drugs are the same.
people get addicted because they're in emotional as well as physical pain.

What the pro-drug crowd hates to admit is that drugs are soul destroying, motivation destroying agents.

I have no problem agreeing that drugs---including the addictive drug alcohol---can have this effect.

..."RUSH said he has been addicted for 5-6 years after spinal/back surgery. I've pooh-poohed the stories that this medication can cause deafness. I am now willing to revisit, rethink and re-investigate..."

I've pooh-poohed the entire thing unable to believe something like this could happen to him. Gosh, was I ever proven wrong - I mean even in private conversations with my hubby I flatly refused to even visit the notion Rush could have succumbed to this.

Boy, my heart goes out to him though. I don't think I know of a single person who hasn't gone through something serious and/or devasting at some point. We are all only human but I have to say I'm really completely shocked over this. I had turned the radio off the last hour so I didn't hear this. I would probably have been in tears for him. Prayers sent for Rush and his family because they have some tough times ahead.

Rush stated it isn't a cure all. He knows he will deal with this for the rest of his life.

"We're all human. Rush will get the help he needs and he'll be back bigger and better than before."

You're probably right. Now, what I wonder is whether those who are expressing sympathy and support for Rush today will extend the same sympathy and support for everyone else who is fighting with an opiate addiction.

Rush is addicted, just as much as are thousands who are serving jail terms for their addictions. Yet, the tendency here on FR is to call those people, who are not celebrities or wealthy, the scum of the earth.

I hope a lesson is learned here, a lesson that even our heroes can become addicted to drugs. All addicts need treatment. Rush is fortunate; he can pay for 30 days at the Betty Ford clinic or some similar and expensive place.

No such luck for most addicts.
