Gibson movie an alternative to mindless violence
February 19, 2004
I watched Diane Sawyer interview Mel Gibson Feb. 16 concerning the new movie he's produced, "The Passion of the Christ." From what I saw and have been reading, some are concerned about the movie and the impact it might have. I think the announcer for ABC called it "possibly the most controversial film ever."
These things leave me almost speechless. This movie is about the last hours of Jesus Christ, and yet is it more controversial and worthy of scrutiny than "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" or "Kill Bill"? Pundits and Hollywood activists are concerned about a movie that accurately follows a small portion of the Gospel of John, as found in the Bible, while celebrating and giving awards to such adultery and murder-laced films as "Chicago."
This would be the industry that produces hundreds of hours of mindless violence and foul-mouthed sexual innuendo? These would be the folks who hold that the First Amendment is a license to flood the Internet with pornography? These would be the people who say, "If you don't like it, just turn it off"? Are these the same people who have problems with "The Passion of the Christ"? Just checking.
This is one movie I won't mind paying full admission to see.
These are the people whose suggestions for making a movie about Christ should be ignored. Or laughed at. Or both.
