p>Satanism Linked to Priest's Murder in Chilean Cathedral

Assailant Invoked Devil's Name, Says Servite Superior

SANTIAGO, Chile, JULY 26, 2004 (Zenit.org).- The archbishop of Santiago decried the existence of Satanic groups in Chile in the wake of the weekend murder of a priest in the metropolitan cathedral.

Cardinal Francisco Errázuriz, archbishop of Santiago and president of the country's episcopate, made that observation Sunday, a day after Servite Father Faustino Gazziero de Stefani, 68, was slain after he had celebrated Mass.

The cardinal lamented that legislative proposals to curb Satanic groups have not been addressed with greater care.

"They have killed Father Faustino also for reasons of faith, for being a priest of Jesus Christ," the cardinal said.

"Satan, the prince of darkness, continues his struggle against the light, as though forgetting that he has already been defeated by Jesus Christ who resurrected after his death and is now the life, hope and light that illumines every human being," he added.

Authorities identified the assailant as Rodrigo Orias Gallardo, 25. Orias, who dressed in black, was armed with a knife, and wounded himself after attacking the priest, authorities said. Police said the assailant was not mentally disturbed or under the influence of drugs.

"It has been a terrible and unexpected tragedy," Father Bernardino Zanella, the vicar responsible for the Servites in Santiago, told the Missionary Service News Agency.

"This young man did not know Father Faustino," he said. "Inspired by the madness of Satanic groups, he attacked him, but he would have attacked anyone who was in that place at that time."

"A brother who was present in the cathedral told us that after killing Father Faustino, the youth knelt down by his side invoking Satan's name," Father Zanella reported.

The Servite vicar warned that "the phenomenon of Satanism in Chile, as in other countries of the world, is growing strongly. Numerous groups are active in the country, especially in the cities, although in recent years their presence has also spread to minor urban centers."

To date, these groups "had limited themselves to desecrate and commit acts of vandalism in sacred places and cemeteries, but it never happened that they attacked persons," the Servite added.

Father Gazziero was a native of Lozzo Atestino, Italy. He went to Chile in 1960, immediately after his priestly ordination.

For years he had been dedicated to education. He was president of the St. Teresa Foundation, which administers numerous schools in the country. He coordinated four schools of the Servants of Mary in Santiago.

He will be buried in the cathedral.

1 Peter 5:8

Be selfcontrolled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

This is a tragic story, but we can see that good is gradually being restored within the Church, and that is why the diabolical attacks on her will increase.

From the article:"Police said the assailant was not mentally disturbed..."

They might want to review that conclusion. [irony]

I assume they meant by that that prior to this attack no one had noticed anything particularly abnormal in his behavior or cognitive functioning. That would seem a little extraordinary. There must be more to this.

Thanks. I figured Satanism was involved when I read the original story.

From the article:"Police said the assailant was not mentally disturbed..."

They may be partially correct - in a way. A person involved in Satanic worship may or may not give any clues via his demeanor or behaviour. Although, there are many different types/levels of such inverted worship. Some do give away their "belief" by modes of dress, speech, etc. These are usually the lower eshelon in the pecking order. This person may well be a victim of "obsession".

But, I would comment that this person, is probably one whose involvement is on a lower eshelon. The more dangerous ones do not make themselves visible, much less so obvious. Ones like this person do the dirty work for the higher ups.

Good tagline... but I thought it was "Vade retro, Satana. Numquam suade mihi vana."

"Vade retro, Satana. Numquam suade mihi vana."

Well, that along with my tagline is one of many prayers of exorcism from the Roman Ritual. Now you are making me get out my dictionary to translate that one......

I believe that one can be perfectly sane and still carry out evil acts, even such a horrible murder.

True. But someone babbling high weirdness about Satan, stabbing a priest, and then committing suicide would lead one to suspect mental/emotional imbalance of some type. Whether this was a sudden schizophrenic psychotic episode, a case of diabolic possession,a cult ritual murder or something else, there's no way to tell just from the article.

If no one had ever noticed anything strange or unusual about the murderer before this incident, that would certainly be very odd indeed.

True enough. After reflection - I would agree. There is usually some clue, even a subtle one. So either nobody was paying attention, or nobody was "reading the signs aright"!

If the person in question was in a cult, it's certainly possible for them to keep a low profile. And even someone suffering from very bizarre schizoid psychotic delusions may appear "fine" on the outside to most people. But in general, you don't think of a perfectly "normal" person just all of the sudden snapping and murdering a priest for Satan. Of course, we are now living in spiritually bizarre times. Time for much prayer and vigilance.

ok - I wil have to remember that one! I recognized the concept of "vanity" in the phrase, but as my latin texts are packed away, and I dont use it in everyday work, I couldn't remember enough to even fake a correct translation.

Many thanks!

Like the Muslims which flew planes filled with innocent people into the WTC --- or who behead innocent people in the name of their satan.

Consoled to know that I am not the only one who sees the hand of the Holy Spirit at work in Holy Mother Church.

May God have mercy on the soul of this unfortunate priest.

That's exactly what I mean. Or the Palestinial terrorists who kill innocent people who are merely going about their ordianry business.
