His Holiness Pope John Paul II, Tuesday, 4 October 2004:

The decisive duty of the Christian is in seeking the will of God in everything, in knowing it and carrying it out. This daily challenge was addressed by the man of state and Christian Charles, of the House of Austria. He was a friend of peace. In his eyes, war was “something horrible”. Ascending the throne in the midst of the storm of the First World War, he tried to take up the peace initiative of my predecessor Benedict XV.

From the beginning, Emperor Charles understood his task of sovereign as a holy service to peoples. His first need, in his political conduct, was to follow the call of Christians to holiness. That is why he considered the idea of social love important. May he always be a model for us all, in particular for those today who have a political responsibility in Europe!

FYI, B-Chan, here's the official prayer of thanksgiving:

Amen.

And the official English translation (rather better than average, though I still abhor the use of the second person plural)

Almighty God, Lord of Lords and King of Kings, in Your infinite fatherly love you are keeping watch over the fate of men and nations. You called Your servant, Emperor and King Charles of the House of Austria, to serve as a father to his peoples in difficult times and to promote peace with all his strength. By sacrificing his life, he sealed his willingness to fulfill Your holy will.

Grant us the grace, with his intercession, to follow his example and serve the true cause of peace, which we find in the faithful fulfillment of Your holy will. We ask this through him, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen

I wonder if you want to comment on this, since you seem to have a special interest in this topic? In the past you have often attacked Pope Benedict XV for his peace overtures during WWI. Apparently Karl von Habsburg is being beatified for the same thing, in fact another article on the topic mentioned his cooperation with Benedict XV specifically as one of the main points of evidence for his "heroic virtue."

Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich

I just came across this in the Catholic Encyclopedia, and it reminded me what an appropriate example she is for our own time:

"Sister Emmerich lived during one of the saddest and least glorious periods of the Church's history, when revolution triumphed, impiety flourished, and several of the fairest provinces of its domain were overrun by infidels and cast into such ruinous condition that the Faith seemed about to be completely extinguished. Her mission in part seems to have been by her prayers and sufferings to aid in restoring Church discipline, especially in Westphalia, and at the same time to strengthen at least the little ones of the flock in their belief. Besides all this she saved many souls and recalled to the Christian world that the supernatural is around about it to a degree sometimes forgotten.

“BitPig” is the way one pronounces the acronym formed by the first letters of the title of my online journal. Bruce The Psychic Guy = BTPG, or “bitpig”.

Anyone headed up to New York Saturday for the Solemn High Mass? I really want to go but have other commitments. Some friends of mine are going though.
