Novena For The US Election, Day 4 (and prayer thread)
10/28/04 | Knitting A Conundrum

Our Father who art in Heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name, Thy kingdom Come Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our tresspasses, as we forgive those who tresspass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed are thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of our death, Amen.

Glory to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever more shall be, world without end, Amen.

Lord, into your hands do we commend our country during this time of election. Be with those who vote, be with those who work the polling stations, be with those who count the votes, certify the elections, and all who are involved with the process. Lord, we pray that in our choosing, we may reflect your choice and that our country be in your hands, now and forever, Amen.

O Mary of the Immaculate Conception, Patroness of the United States, O Mary, Mother of God, endowed in your glorious Immaculate Conception with the fullness of grace; unique among women in that you are both mother and virgin; Mother of Christ and Virgin of Christ, we ask you to look down with a tender heart from your throne and listen to our prayers as we earnestly ask that you obtain for us the favor for which we now plead

that the hand our Our Father guide our country during this upcoming election,

that those who would disrupt and disturb the heritage of freedom and truth be restrained,

and that the hand of God guide, direct and determine our leaders this election cycle and always.

O Mary of the Immaculate Conception, Mother of Christ, you had influence with your Divine Son while upon this earth; you have the same influence now in heaven. Pray for us and obtain for us from him the granting of my petition if it be the Divine Will. Amen.

St. Thomas More, adorer of Christ's Passion, who put prayer before all else, devoted husband and father, defender of the Church, perfect model of friendship, impervious to all bribery, committed to the common good, who reverenced civil and Divine law, civil judge of unimpeachable integrity patron of those who hold public office, pray for us now at this critical time of election, where so much is at stake, where the lives of the unborn and those most vunerable hang in the balance, where the lives of the downtrodden and defenseless against the terrorist are most at risk. Pray for us, St. Thomas More, martyr for the truth, that with this election, we may draw ever closer to the way God would have our country governed.

Little Souls, children unborn, holy innocents, ripped from your mothers' wombs and now in the hand of our loving Lord, pray for us now, that the election may go to the one most likely to help stem the holocaust of souls of the most vunerable, the one most likely to be the champion of life and set our nation on the right track.

Amen.

A Prayer For Our National Elections

This prayer was written by Fr. Frank Pavone of Priests for Life.

O God, we acknowledge You today as Lord,
Not only of individuals, but of nations and governments.

We thank You for the privilege
Of being able to organize ourselves politically
And of knowing that political loyalty
Does not have to mean disloyalty to You.

We thank You for Your law,
Which our Founding Fathers acknowledged
And recognized as higher than any human law.

We thank You for the opportunity that this election year puts before us,
To exercise our solemn duty not only to vote,
But to influence countless others to vote,
And to vote correctly.

Lord, we pray that Your people may be awakened.
Let them realize that while politics is not their salvation,
Their response to You requires that they be politically active.

Awaken Your people to know that they are not called to be a sect fleeing the world
But rather a community of faith renewing the world.

Awaken them that the same hands lifted up to You in prayer
Are the hands that pull the lever in the voting booth;
That the same eyes that read Your Word
Are the eyes that read the names on the ballot,
And that they do not cease to be Christians
When they enter the voting booth.

Awaken Your people to a commitment to justice,
To the sanctity of marriage and the family,
To the dignity of each individual human life,
And to the truth that human rights begin when Human Lives Begin,
And not one moment later.

Lord, we rejoice today
That we are citizens of Your kingdom.

May that make us all the more committed
To being faithful citizens on earth.

We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

In the Catholic way, I offer the following prayer up for President Bush and the safety of America as the election closes:

Today, O Lord,
may we remember
that we are small,
frail,
weak,
little lives
that have no purpose
unless you give purpose,
little strength
unless you enkindle it.
May we remember,
dear Lord,
that all the knowledge
we pride ourselves on
has its source
in you and your creation,
that all the skill
we boast of
has its source
as a gift from you,
and may we see
that using these gifts
and knowledge
in hubris,
without thought of you
leads us down the road to sorrow.

Amen.

O Lord,
So much rides on this election,
war,
life,
truth,
honor.
There are those
who would still our voices,
tell us to be quiet,
tell us to turn away,
tell us to die.

And yet we know
that to do your will,
we must take a stand,
and in doing that, we ask your blessing
on this election,
on this president who holds you dear,
on the lives of the unborn
that will be saved
because of the action he takes,
the lives of the innocent
that will be preserved
because of the action he takes
against our foes,
and the lives of the people he will save
by being an example
of an upright man
who loves God.

Help us, Lord,
to be your hands
to do the actions needed.

Help us, Lord,
and protect us
against the darkness
of those who would destroy
all the good
our country stands for.

Amen.
________

Also, for your meditation:

Life Too Short for Words

Their small lives,
short,
too short for words
to begin to give them voice
for the shattering moment
which in fear and pain
they were overwhelmed
and pulled into the dark
before their time
by those they were formed to love
but who did not love them back,
a nuiscence to be removed,
a crisis to be resolved,
a bump in the life
to be cut away,
dissolved,
dismembered,
discarded.

No words to describe
the nightmare
except
tissue,
unwanted,
stem cell product,
abortion.

Prayer:
Into your hands Lord,
do we commend these little souls,
lost through man's inhumanity,
sacrificed on Molech's new altar,
sterile white.

O Blessed Mother,
Hold each of them in your loving hands,
and be the mother they will never have on earth.

Pray for us, little souls,
that we who have such hard hearts
may learn the reality of the evil done,
may be healed of the darkness that would take the life of an innocent,
and choose not the path that leads to death,
but to life eternal.

Amen.

O Lord,
this day we see once again
how the hands of others are raised
in threat to try to put out the light
you have let us be to the nations.

Be with us Lord,
at this time when so much is at stake,
so many lives hang in the balance.

Into your hands, O Lord,
I commend the President, that he may lead us wisely,
I commend to you his staffers, assistants and fellow workers.
those who are working so hard
to see him reelected.

Keep them safe,
fill them with the wisdom
that will let them fullfill your roll for them.

Into your hands, O Lord,
I commend those set apart
to watch over this election
on which so much hangs.
Help those who are striving to enforce the law,
and are committed to justice.

Into your hands, O Lord,
I commend the nation
while threats are made
by those who refuse to see
that striving against the law of the land
in the name of power
will only bring on grief.
Keep us safe from those who would harm us
from abroad,
and at home.

O Lord,
be thou are strength,
and may all of us who love you
be tools for your will,
this day,
and always.

Amen.

____________

Another Prayer:

For Those Who Do Not Believe

O Lord,
Today I pray for those
who turned their back when you called,
who raised their children
to despise what you stand for,
who cry in the night
when the darkness seems so heavy,
who craves meaning and light
but shutters the windows against the true light.

Have mercy on them, O Lord,
soften their hearts,
and let them realize
that all their posturing,
all their sense of superiority,
all their pretense to high culture
and worldly wisdom
will not save them against the night.

O Jesus,
teach us the way
to bring your light
wherever the darkness dwells.

Now and forever,
Amen.
