I would like to see an angry Pope, who lays down the law, and sends forth prelates to enforce his dictums.
Call me a pessimist, but I don't hold out hope for the next pope at all - take a look at who will be choosing him. If we're looking for attrition, retirement and death in hope that these problems will solve themselves, then take a look at our "farm"; uncatechized youth, the condition of our seminaries, vocation recruiting etc. Gays and leftists are still everywhere, they've just toned it down a bit.
I'm starting to fear that what one priest told me, that this would take several centuries to straighten out. He was a real pessimist. Who knows.
God can solve this. Possibly some major seachange via split/schism, movement in within the laity, external forces caused by world events etc.
I think one thing everyone agrees on is that we have a huge problem that is not easy to solve.
