Gay couple's sons anger Catholic parents

COSTA MESA, Calif. -- Some parents and parishioners have accused the Roman Catholic diocese in Orange County of violating church doctrine by allowing a gay couple to enroll their children in a church school.

The group demanded that St. John the Baptist School in Costa Mesa accept only families that pledge to abide by Catholic teachings, the Los Angeles Times reported in Sunday's editions. Church doctrine opposes gay relationships and adoption by same-sex couples.

"The teachings of the church seem to have been abandoned," John R. Nixon told the Times. "We send our children to a Catholic school because we expect and demand that the teachings of our church will be adhered to."

School officials rejected the demand, and issued a new policy stating that a family's background "does not constitute an absolute obstacle to enrollment in the school."

The parents' demand would presumably prevent two adopted boys whose parents are both men from attending the school's kindergarten.

The Rev. Gerald M. Horan, superintendent of diocese schools, said that if Catholic beliefs were strictly adhered to, then children whose parents divorced, used birth control or married outside the church would also have to be banned.

"This is the quagmire that the parents' position represents," he said. "It's a slippery slope to go down."

The boys' parents, who enrolled their children at the beginning of the school year, declined to comment to the Times.

Some parents have promised to ask the Vatican to intervene and some have threatened to pull their children from the school. Others are worried the boys' attendance will set a precedent, saying their presence is part of a larger effort by the gay community to change the church.

"The boys are being used as pawns by these men to further their agenda," said Monica Sii, who has four children at the school.

Personally, I think this is a misdirected effort.  Essentially, you're punishing a kid who's already in a bad spot, being raised by a couple of fags.  The child hasn't committed the sin.  Open the doors to Salvation and open your hearts to this child.

In a secular school, he'll likely never hear the truth about the abomination that is homosexuality and might grow up to condone it.

More than likely, these "parents" are using this kid as a tool for their political agenda.

As soon as this child hears anyhting negative abuot homosexual behavior, he'll raise a stink, the ACLU will get involved, ad nauseum.

When parents seek to enroll their kids in these schools, are they asked any questions concerning how they have lived or do live their lives? Divorce, birth control, etc?

That is so much modernist quasi-Catholic BS out of the head of the school. That gay partnership is public and scandalous. A divorced and remarried person without an annulment would fall into the same category, but not the divorced chaste parent. The practicing contraceptor is not a public act or scandal, therefore different.

When the classmates want to go to the gay parent's house to play or spend the night that puts Catholic heterosexual parents in a real quandary. No one with half a brain wants that kind of modeling for their child and to explain why they won't let them go presents a problem for both children.

It is unloving for the school to do this, both to the homosexuals, the straight parents and all the kids. The truth done in love will set them free.

You're probably dead on about the "parents" using the child to advance their political agenda.  However, what authority would the ACLU have over a Parochial School?  I can only speak of the one I send my daughter to, but they don't recieve any Fed/State/Municipal money that I'm aware of.  I'd believe in a case like that, The Church can tell the ACLU to F- off, right?

Interesting post. How about the children of a parent who has been convicted of some sinful crime? Public act? Scandal? Does it have to be a continuing sin as opposed to a one-time sin in the past?

Exactly correct.

...two adopted boys...

All homosexual adoption is child abuse. The state is complicit in this criminal abuse of minors. And now, so is this Catholic diocese in Orange County.

I'm with you. Instead of protesting the school, the concerned parents should examine the sin in their own lives, and then perhaps visit these boys' "parents" and discuss homosexuality as Christians - with love and respect for their fellow man. Pointing fingers in an accusatory manner is not going to solve anything.

Yes they can, but that doesn't prevent the ACLU (or other homo-rights groups) from bringing unwanted attention to the school.

A lot of these groups know they have no legal leg to stand on, so they rely on intimidation to achieve their perverted agendas.

Hi Biker,

Most crimes are past deeds and not continuing. The punishment has been executed by the secular society usually and therefore not scandalous.

Continuing criminality or sinfullnes are another matter. Then scandal comes into play and the modeling and scandalous lack of love by Christians who look the other way becomes an issue.

I grew up in a city where the Mafia had a large presence and the Catholic schools gave great scandal when they let the kids go to school. Again, few people wanted their kids hanging around that element and I personally saw lives destroyed when girls dated the Mafia sons.

Truth spoken and lived in love will save us.

It seems cruel to visit the sins of the parents onto the children.

Moreover, it seems counterproductive to say no to such kids and I think the Church understands this. Rather than relegate such kids to public school, better to accept the children of parents who sin publicly (gay people, Mafia members, etc.) and allow them to learn in an environment that might be a bullwork against such transgressions.

Well that. You should teach theology to those that pretend to run that "Catholic" school.

I do...one...but not in school anymore.

Do you mean that you prefer the children of public sinners to receive a public education instead of receiving a religiously-based education?

I've got two.  I wouldn't have any problem with one of their classmates who had fag parents, being told that they were living in sin.  I would, on the other hand, have a MAJOR problem if the school tried to teach that it was "just another lifestyle choice equal in merit to any other lifestyle choice." but that doesn't seem to be the case here.

My take:

Give the kid a good Catholic education and keep his "parents" out of the school. PT conferences can be done off church grounds and away from young children.

And be sure that you put it all in wiritng because these two are gonna enlist the ACLU sooner or later.
