Women Forgoing Contraception? Good!

By Matt Abbott Op/Ed

A January 4 story in the Washington Post said that more adult women are choosing not to use contraception. Interestingly, this story comes almost at the heels of a report criticizing abstinence-only education, which proponents of Planned Parenthood-style comprehensive sex education deem deficient.

According to the story, written by Ceci Connolly, the results of the study, which found that “women who had sex in the previous three months but did not use birth control rose from 5.2 percent in 1995 to 7.4 percent in 2002,” came “from one-on-one interviews with 12,500 women and men ages 15 to 44. Government interviewers, who spent an average of 85 minutes with each person, found that 98 percent of women reported using contraception during their reproductive years, and the pill was the most popular choice, followed by female sterilization -- usually by having their fallopian tubes tied….”

A couple of points here. The birth control pill and the morning-after pill are not true contraceptives; they are abortifacients, meaning they can cause an early abortion by preventing implantation of the living human embryo into the uterine lining. If this happens, a chemical abortion takes place. A true contraceptive, such as the condom and diaphragm, only prevents fertilization; it does not work once pregnancy (fertilization) occurs.

The Catholic Church rightly teaches that the use of any form of contraception is intrinsically immoral, for it frustrates the marital act, which by its very nature is both love-giving (unitive) and life-giving (procreative). Thus one cannot deliberately frustrate the procreative aspect of the marital act through contraception or sterilization.

Researcher and author Brian Clowes, PhD, in his book The Facts of Life, quotes the late Mother Teresa on this subject:

"In destroying the power of giving life, through contraception, a husband or wife is doing something to self. This turns the attention to self and so it destroys the gifts of love in him or her. In loving, the husband and wife must turn the attention to each other as happens in natural family planning, and not to self, as happens in contraception. Once that living love is destroyed by contraception, abortion follows very easily."

Also, the widespread use of contraception has not and will not lead to fewer unintended pregnancies, which means it will not reduce the number of abortions. There are approximately 1.3 million surgical abortions committed each year, and there are even more - many more - abortions that take place as a result of the use of abortifacient birth control. If the widespread use of contraception actually prevented most unintended pregnancies, we wouldn’t have anywhere near the number of abortions being committed today (and even one abortion is one too many).

Married couples may want to look into a version of Natural Family Planning called NaProTechnology, developed by Dr. Tom Hilgers, director of the National Center for Women's Health and Clinical Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Creighton University School of Medicine. He is also the director of the Pope Paul VI Institute for the Study of Human Reproduction. Among the benefits of NaProTechnology:

• It is 79 percent effective at helping women have a successful pregnancy after they have suffered repeated miscarriage;

• It can help women learn that they are at risk for a miscarriage even before one has occurred;

• It is 95 percent effective at treating Post-Partum Depression, which afflicts as many as one in five new mothers, often getting results within hours;

• It cuts the rate of premature births in half, thus helping reduce the incidence of birth defects;

• It effectively treats endometriosis with a lower rate of recurrence than methods doctors currently use;

• It effectively treats women experiencing infertility with up to an 80 percent success rate.

For more information on NaProTechnology, visit www.NaProTechnology.com.

The bottom line is this: we will not see a drastic drop in unintended pregnancies, sexually-transmitted diseases or abortions unless and until the vast majority of people begin to respect the moral law. This means no sex outside of marriage, and the use of natural family planning (for serious reasons) within marriage. In this way we will truly build a culture of life!

More abortions in the name of population control and a better lifestyle. How abhorrant. Natural Family Planning works. It takes dicipline on both the Husband's and Wife's side, which a majority of people don't have in this instant gratification world we live in...

I wouldn't start bringing out the champagne yet. THe study said nothing about whether these women not using contraception are married or not, nor whether or not they are trying to get pregnant but plan on using contraception in the future.

FYI ping.

I think something that isn't mentioned is more and more churches are reviewing the pill. I know that the LCMS is seriously considering saying that members should not be on the pill.

I will say the pill works to reduce fibroids in women, though those usually don't appear until late-in or after a woman's child-bearing years.

The following is from my wife - o&t :

Something about this survey just doesn't seem right. I didn't read the original article, but are we to believe that only a little more than 7 percent of women aren't using birth control? Why, I'd think more than that were actively hoping to conceive!

I also don't believe this business about the pill being the birth control method of choice. I personally know a good number of women who on an instinctive level don't believe it's right to play around with hormones. Don't we all know somebody whose blood pressure or weight went through the roof after a brief stint on the pill?

As my wife (a pro-life NFP-using Catholic M.D.) says, "If the Pill had nothing to do with sex, it would have been taken off the market years ago."

Far more people have died from BCPs than have died from Vioxx.

Yep, I bet those choosing to not use contraception are unmarried. Perhaps the former feminists who have decided at 40 they want to have a baby.
I don't see anything wrong with contraception. Aborting a fertilized egg (fetus) is one thing, but preventing the fertilization is another. No child is conceived and then it isn't murder. Too many babies can equal death for a mother. I know one who just had her eighth child and the doc says no more or she can die. In that case, is contraception wrong? It it worse for this couple to use a condom than it would be for the mother to die in childbirth and leave 8 kids without a mom?
If you can't feed your family, should you use contraception? If you aren't supposed to have any more children (doc's orders), is it better to cut your husband off from sex or use contraception?
Think of all those people in underdeveloped countries who keep having babies and can't feed their families. They often end up selling one or more of their kids to other families as servants. Is it really worse to prevent a birth via contraception than to subject a child to starvation or servitude? Does anyone care about these kids after they are born?

Far more died in child birth before the pill that die from the pill. By the way, I don't use the pill, I use abstinence.

Got this today via Email. Is this crap or what?

1. Urge FDA to Improve Emergency Contraception Access
Act today: http://www.care2.com/go/z/20613

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has until tomorrow,
January 20 to decide to allow over-the-counter sales of
the morning-after pill, Plan B®. We've been here before:
last year, Care2 members sent over 23,000 comments to the
FDA in support of over-the-counter access to emergency
contraception (EC). The FDA has already found EC to be
safe and effective, and the FDA's own advisors
overwhelmingly recommended approving the application.

So what happened? On May 6, 2004 the FDA caved in to
right-wing pressure and denied the application. Will the
FDA do the right thing this time and help women prevent
unintended pregnancy? Or will politics prevail again?
Your voice matters: http://www.care2.com/go/z/20613

Here's how far this administration will go to put politics
before women's health and lives: The Department of Justice
has just released its first-ever medical guidelines for
treating sexual assault victims - and they have dropped
any reference to EC. Apparently, helping women who have
been raped isn't as important to the Bush administration
as pushing its own far-right ideology.

Please sign today to help make EC more accessible to
victims of sexual assault, and all women who need it:

2. Tell President Bush: Don't Take Away Our Health Care
Petition: http://www.care2.com/go/z/20615

According to a recent article in the Washington Post,
President Bush is considering simplifying the tax code by
cutting taxes for large corporations. His advisers are
quoted saying that he will pay for it by "scrapping the
business tax deduction for employer-provided
health insurance."

As more and more businesses are already finding it
difficult to afford the cost of providing coverage to
their employees, this short-sighted move would reward
companies that don't provide health care and punish those
that do!

Tell President Bush that eliminating this deduction would
result in more companies dropping the health care that
their employees depend on. Sign this petition to urge him
not to mess with the tax code by taking away our health
care: http://www.care2.com/go/z/20615

Instead of proposing ways to cut health care, President
Bush should be working on a plan that will ensure that
every man, woman and child in this country has access to
health care. The longer we wait to solve the health care
crisis, the worse it's going to get.

Please act today: http://www.care2.com/go/z/20615

Watch how they turn their real agenda of "Abortion on Demand" into a caring, looking out for the victims of rape and incest debate:

Here's how far this administration will go to put politics before women's health and lives: The Department of Justice has just released its first-ever medical guidelines for treating sexual assault victims - and they have dropped any reference to EC (Lets use euphemisms for abortions). Apparently, helping women who have been raped isn't as important to the Bush administration as pushing its own far-right ideology.

Once again, innocent babies are paying with their lives for the mistakes or circumstances of others...Why punish the baby? This is the wacko left speaking just like Cameron Diaz's idiotic statement on Oprah regarding voting in the presidential election "We have a voice now, and we're not using it, and women have so much to lose. I mean, we could lose the right to our bodies. We could lo--if you think that rape should be legal, then don't vote."

Please sign today to help make EC (Abortions on demand) more accessible to victims of sexual assault, and all women who need it( translation: Any woman or girl of any age should be able to abort any child for any reason): http://www.care2.com/go/z/20613

His advisers are quoted saying that he will pay for it by "scrapping the business tax deduction for employer-provided health insurance."

Duh, if the president is going to give corporations a break by lowering their burden, why will the corporations drop health care coverage? The reason why some businesses charge more for health care or drop it is because of the increased burden of the Federal, State and Local taxes reducing their bottom line.

As more and more businesses are already finding it difficult to afford the cost of providing coverage to their employees, this short-sighted move would reward companies that don't provide health care and punish those that do!

Tell President Bush that eliminating this deduction would result in more companies dropping the health care that their employees depend on. Sign this petition to urge him not to mess with the tax code (Democrat liberal agenda and pork ca$h cow) by taking away our health care: http://www.care2.com/go/z/20615

Instead of proposing ways to cut health care, President Bush should be working on a plan that will ensure that every man, woman and child in this country has access to health care.

They already do. Walk into any emergency room and take a look around at all of the uninsured people being treated by the mean corporate hospitals. I know in my state (NJ) it is against the law to refuse treatment to anyone regardless of their ability to pay

The longer we wait to solve the health care crisis, the worse it's going to get.

Please act today: http://www.care2.com/go/z/20615

More like most are celebrating Bush's election
