In the midst of this, in chapter 9, is Daniel's wonderful prayer as he pours his heart out to God. The answer to his prayer, in the last section of the chapter, is one of the most remarkable prophecies in all the Bible: the prophecy of the seventy weeks. This is the timetable of prophecy concerning the nation Israel. It gives us the principle that is called "the great parenthesis" -- God has interrupted his program for Israel and has inserted between the first coming and the second coming of the Lord Jesus the present age in which we live.

This indeterminate period, which has now spanned more than nineteen hundred years, comes between the sixty-ninth week of years and the seventieth of the prophecy. The seventieth week, a week of seven years, is yet to be fulfilled for Israel. As you read of this you will see that this is what the book of Revelation and other prophetic passages call "the great tribulation," the time of Jacob's trouble. It lies ahead. It has been broken off from the other sixty-nine and is yet to be fulfilled.

On the other hand...

Daniel 9:23-27

23 At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to shew thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision.
24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.
25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.
26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.
27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

When did the commandment to inform Daniel go forth? A: at the beginning of Daniel's supplications. Who's commandment went forth? God's, at the beginning of Daniel's supplications.

THEREFORE (know and understand), when did the commandment go forth to restore and build Jerusalem?

Nehemiah 1:1-6

1 The words of Nehemiah the son of Hachaliah. And it came to pass in the month Chisleu, in the twentieth year, as I was in Shushan the palace,
2 That Hanani, one of my brethren, came, he and certain men of Judah; and I asked them concerning the Jews that had escaped, which were left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem.
3 And they said unto me, The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire.
4 And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven,
5 And said, I beseech thee, O LORD God of heaven, the great and terrible God, that keepeth covenant and mercy for them that love him and observe his commandments:
6 Let thine ear now be attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, and confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against thee: both I and my father's house have sinned.

It's dated to the month of Kislev in the 20th year of Artaxerxes. Scholars dispute when this 20th year occurred... some claim circa 445/444 BC, others 455/454 BC. What makes most sense with a plain read Scripture?

In Luke 3, John's ministry is dated to the 15th year of the reign of Tiberius. Historical records consistently point to the range of Aug/Sept AD 28 to Aug/Sept AD 29. John arrived prior to Jesus. If Artaxerxes 20th year was 455/454 BC, then Kislev would be in 455 BC. 69 x 7 years later comes to Kislev of 29 AD.

The Haftarah read by Jesus in the synagogue in Luke 4 corresponds to reading 34 in the 3rd year of the triennnial cycle. That would be the last Sabbath of Cheschvan or the first Sabbath of Kislev. In 29 AD, going by 1) the moon phases from an astronomy program, and 2) the modern range of Hebrew dates within the confines of the Gregorian calendar (IOW not assigning any old convenient date but falling within the acceptable ranges used today), 1 Kislev 29 AD was a Sabbath.

Right on schedule, according to Daniel 9:25, as keyed to Nehemiah 1:1-6:

Luke 4:16-17

16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.
17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,
18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.
21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.

How can this announcement begin the 70th seven if the crucifixion took place approx. 3 years and 4 months later?

Dan 9:26-27 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. 27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate*, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

The covenant reference is in Dan 9:4.

* Cf. Lev 26

The church IS the [defiled] "tribulation temple". Struck dumb until the time be fulfilled, as in the manner of Zacharias:

Luke 1:19 And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee*, and to shew thee these glad tidings.
Luke 1:20 And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.

*Zacharias was praying in the Temple. Gabriel arrived to announce the answer to his prayer. But Zacharias couldn't have been praying for a child, as the conversation indicates that Zacharias thought the idea ridiculous due to geriatrics. So what could Zacharias have been praying for, that equals the birth of John? Maybe he was singing

Eliyahu, hanavi
Eliyahu hatishbi
Eliyahu, Eliyahu, Eliyahu hagiladi.

Bimherah beyameinu
Yavo eleinu
Im Mashiach ben David
Im Mashiach ben David

Matthew 11:13-15 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. 14 And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come. 15 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

John = "Jehovah is a gracious giver"

I'll say!
